Looking forward to taking part in this, thinking about the environmental impact of data exhaust as part of the @ispysensors project
Today, [THREAD 1/3] we will be joined by an international group of researchers to discuss the opaque impact that technology has on the environment 💻🌳 Together, we will examine key questions in this field that require immediate action and research. @CRASSHlive @CambridgeZero

I learned so much from books like Stephen Biesty’s Incredible Cross Sections, where peeping inside a thing told the story of how it worked. Can this work for digital devices though - when opening the black box just reveals more black boxes?
New @ispysensors research with kids. Part 1 what do they know about sensors in digital devices. Links with tradition of taking things apart & “what’s inside” genre. Really like @ustwogames mechanic in Assemble with Care. It’s all analogue tech though... @MainAngus @hdinetwork

I’ve been playing with the @adafruit Voice Bonnet, creating offline AI voice tools. What’s great is it has a physical kill-switch for the microphones, so users can be sure it’s stopped listening. More sensor devices need this kind of #SurveillanceResistance feature. @ispysensors

At our network event tomorrow we’ll be looking particularly at how children are impacted by sensor observation, and how we can involve them in designing tools for resistance. https://t.co/xkUHi8mxq7

How many sensors surround you right now? And what exactly can they observe? Countermeasures looks at raising awareness of the sensors which sense you, and finding creative ways of regaining privacy. More information here: https://t.co/pYYmE1vSaV

I’m preparing an interesting talk on social issues rooted on childhood and how they influence the way children (and adults!) relate to data ethics. You can join us this Friday, more info on @ispysensors
Our first @hdinetwork funded event is coming up this Friday. We'll be discussing issues relating to kids, technology, and data ethics, with network members: @techwillsaveus @projectsbyif @KidsKnowBest @bbcuxd @dylanyamadarice @JohnPP

New project website via @MainAngus if we could no longer scrape reliable data from children's devices might we have to speak to them again? @Livingstone_S @jackiemarsh @JohnPP

The Countermeasures book - I Spy Sensors - is a friendly guide to the digital sensors which surround us. It shows you where you'll find sensors such as accelerometers, barometers, magnetometers and proximity sensors, and what these components can observe about your behaviours.
