But a key goal of this program is that it is "concurrent" with Mars Sample Return - to keep Mars science moving forward while we work on bringing samples back, so our job as a community will be to ensure that this critical program stays in the budget wedge.

We envision the missions working together in a "Braided River", where multiple small, low-cost missions work together to address larger outstanding Mars questions. It's possible that the first missions in this program could be selected by the end of this decade!

We aim to use Mars as a laboratory where we can not only explore records of how habitable terrestrial planets evolve over billions of years, but also how microbial life might be living on Mars today. The program would start with orbiters but build up to hard landers, helis, etc.

The program is called "Dynamic Mars: Investigating ancient and modern drivers of change on an active planet", and would use openly competed low-cost missions to make major discoveries in how the interior, surface, and atmosphere of Mars have evolved and are continuing to change.
