Glaciers worldwide lost 273 BILLION tonnes of ice annually from 2000 to 2023! Losses increased by 36% between 2000–2011 to 2012–2023 Sobering results which underline the need for greater #ClimateAction in this year of #glacier preservation https://t.co/whPS7BzwQk

It is one thing that students expect flexibility in work hours, which I fully support but an entirely different thing that if we have to chase students when there is a deadline staring at us and they have been informed to be available during regular work hours! #randomrant

https://t.co/HqSOhlqDFB

Initial landslide hs caused a lake to form before 2022, which repeatedly drained. Since 2022 drainage is no longer possible & it hs increased in size by Nov 2024. Large parts of Kunwari hv bn destroyed & r likely to continue to b affected in coming months.

High and rising snowline on Gangotri, Satopanth and Bhagirath Kharak Glacier, India. Landsat image from 10-27 and Sentinel image from 11-6 indicate snowline has risen, to near the top of Satopanth and BK. @irfan_rashid @rakesh_bhambri @GlacierResearch

@Leesky18179449; @ccia_geneva; @unige_en show that #debris_flows in the Alps are controlled by sediment supply not #climate_change. #dendrogeomorphology

Assuming the total population, including the tourists and other workforce, of the Leh district at 100000 (much higher than official numbers) and the per capita consumption at 50 litres a day the water from this proglacial lake would last for almost 2 years. +

The lake currently spread over 18 hectares has a mean depth of ~18 m with a stored water volume of 3.24 million cubic meters (3.24 billion litres) posing a risk to downstream communities and infrastructure. +

The temperature rise witnessed over the past decades has increased the number and size of the proglacial lakes having the potential to release massive water volumes causing catastrophic floods🌊 putting communities and infrastructure at risk. +

On the International Day of Disaster Risk Reduction, I take this opportunity to highlight one of the most critical and growing risks in the Himalaya, Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs). These instantaneous floods occur when the damming moraine of proglacial lake fails. +
