I love when a movie doesn’t age well. Some classic films are timeless, yes, but I prefer films to be time capsules of the moment they were made — you learn more
I’m watching Never Been Kissed — I’m also not weirded out by the Vartan and Barrymore romance, the whole point of falling in love w someone in disguise is that your heart knows the truth (it’s why they’re reading As You Like It!!)

I also think there's a sweet spot where a movie is VERY much of its time (design, hair, technology, etc) but the themes are timeless enough, that I'm all e.g. "look at those ol' cathode ray screens, and great antifascist message"

"blazing saddles couldn't be made today" yes exactly??? it's lampooning contemporaneous issues that we treat differently/don't confront now

Watch All the Presidents Men. Besides being a fantastic important movie, it’s a fabulous time capsule - last time I watched, I was noting all the items that used to be part of daily life that you never see anymore (manual typewriters, record players, corded phones, etc)

Like that scene in Reality Bites where they play a game trying to remember Good Times episodes but then the Internet becomes a thing five minutes later and the scene becomes a relic.

In Nashville Lily Tomlin has two deaf children and she signs to them, and when you see how it’s shot you now realize that Altman is *explaining* sign language, because most people didn’t know about it in 1975.

The Ring... I tried watching with my little brother (17) but it didn't work because I had to explain to him what a VCR & videotape was... so down the YouTube rabbit hole we went instead...
