I could not be more excited to announce that my @Tulane team has won the 2023 Inaugural NBA Trade Deadline Competition. I am grateful for my incredible @FreemanSchool teammates for each playing an integral role: Asher Nissanoff, Cam Dartez, John Burrows, Max Yazdian, Nic Rioja.

Zion was 4-4 from deep in his NBA debut. He was 3-13 3-PT this season.

Thomas Beller has an excellent chapter about Zion in his Lost in the Game book. Zion’s “tantalizing” debut was highlighted by 4 straight 3-pointers in a 3 minute stretch. Williamson has not had a game where he made more than two 3-pointers since that debut on January 22, 2020.
MVP chants break out midway through the 4th at Smoothie King Arena after Zion Williamson hits 4 threes in a row and gets to the line.

Obviously OKC was in asset collection mode and are now coming off a championship, but don’t forget the salary cap has increased 41.7% since 5 seasons go. Also, OKC had 4 players with more dead $ than SGA’s salary: Meyers Leonard, Darius Miller, Justin Jackson, TJ Leaf.

The Thunder have 14 players signed for next season; rookie Thomas Sorber is the lowest paid player. They finished the 2020-21 season with only Al Horford getting paid more than Sorber’s salary next season. This year’s MVP was paid $500k less than Sorber will in his rookie year.

Just In: The Charlotte Hornets signed No. 33 pick Sion James to a four-year, $9.97 million deal, sources told @hoopshype. First two years are $4.7 million guaranteed, the max allowed under the second-round exception. There’s a third-year trigger date and fourth-year team option.

Yves Missi was the Pelicans’ first round pick and is another player who could potentially be moved by new management, with commitment to Zion Williamson and Derik Queen. Missi was the first rookie since Blake Griffin’s 2011 All-Star campaign to record 250 offensive rebounds.
In addition to trading in for Antonio Reeves last year, Bronny James was the only player picked after him to receive a standard contract. Bryson Graham, David Griffin, and Swin Cash are no longer in NOLA, while Joe Dumars & Troy Weaver were not there for last year’s draft.

Reeves had a non-guaranteed salary this year which become guaranteed for $978k on July 23. The Pelicans traded 2 second round pick swaps in 2030 and 2031 during last years draft to pick the former Kentucky guard.

At the 2023 @asuntdc, I identified Josh Minott as a player certainly worthy of a Two-Way contract (Minnesota waived him in the competition). We signed him and waived Alex Fudge. Minott is signing a 2-year deal with the real Boston Celtics, after spending 3 years with Minnesota.

While Deandre Ayton has not lived up to being the #1 pick, he has averaged at least 14 & 10 in all 7 years of his career. Only 3 other players have averaged a double-double in each of his 7 seasons in the association: Giannis, Rudy Gobert, and Nikola Vucevic. Big add for LA.
The Lakers find their starting center in Ayton, the 2018 No. 1 overall pick who is the only player in NBA history to average 15+ points and 60%+ shooting in the postseason. He has career averages of 16.4 points and 10.5 rebounds on 59% shooting over the last seven seasons.

Niang and Mann combine for $23.7 million, so their allowable incoming cap was $32.2 M due to the increased trade allowance. Porzingis’ $30.7 M contract would fit under that threshold. Brooklyn also would’ve created a $7 million Traded Player Exception. Celtics TPE would increase.

If Brooklyn wanted Georges Niang, there could’ve been 2 separate trades. Cap space teams can acquire 1 or more players whose salaries equal their cap space (+$250k). So, they could’ve traded for Porzingis, then subsequently traded Porzingis for Niang and Mann - salary matching.
