In dissolving the body into its mechanized surroundings, they also transformed the individual’s identity through the instruments they wielded, at times turning the man himself into a prosthetic extension of the architecture of modernity.

More than artificial substitutes, these devices tethered the wearer to equipment in the factory, the office, even the home.

Each prosthetic was designed to substitute the tools and utensils of daily labor—hammers and plows, pens and paintbrushes, forks and knives—retraining the body in the mechanical gestures of work.

In the aftermath of the First World War, German orthopedists did not just replace veterans’ lost limbs; they re-armed them for the new challenges of modern life.

While in Mumbai, I had a chance to visit the recently completed @LODHA World Towers, a project I worked on about a decade ago at @PeiCobbFreed. The complex is a 17-acre mixed-used development on the site of a former textile mill in Mumbai’s Lower Parel district.

Delighted to have contributed to the FAB conclave in Mumbai, engaging in meaningful conversations with inspiring peers, and meeting enthusiastic attendees and students. Thank you Sarita Vijayan and FAB team for organizing such an outstanding event.
