Lots of emotion in Canucks' room post-game, especially from players who lived through the chaos because they believed in the team.
J.T. Miller: "Not any part of me ever wanted to go somewhere else. Why would I want to leave something that I've always been looking for?"
One of the first things Braden Holtby did after signing with Canucks was ask for Thatcher Demko’s phone number. Holtby has to perform, but sounds like he’s going to be good teammate/mentor.
Air Canada just announced that our flight to Vancouver from Toronto is also the final journey for a Canadian soldier who lost his life serving our country. Reminder that every day people put their lives at risk for us. 🙏🇨🇦
Laurie Boeser, Brock’s mom: “A few of the boys went over to the grave today, which Brock would have done. There is a purpose and a meaning when he’s out there playing hockey. He appreciates his opportunity to be a pro, but he also knows he’s playing for others, too.”
People are angry at Adam Gaudette for getting COVID? Really? Travis Hamonic’s daughter, Charlie, spent a week in hospital with a serious respiratory illness. And now her dad has COVID.
These are human beings. They deserve some humanity.
Troy Stecher missed a call from a Fort Lauderdale number. Called it back.
Stecher: "Is this Roberto Luongo?"
Luongo: "Yeah, is this Troy from Richmond?"

Canuck Conor Garland said Mikhail Sergachev waited for him after game Thursday to explain the punch and make sure he was OK.
Garland: “It hurt at the time, but I was fine. I’ve played like a rat since I was 16, so I’m used to it.”
I wish to apologize for my inexcusable conduct earlier this evening. I should never have Tweeted that the Canucks had not surrendered a goal under Bruce Boudreau, thus causing a needless goal-against. To Mr. Boudreau and Thatcher Demko and their families, I am truly sorry.
Stecher elated to stay with Canucks. Here’s why:
“I’m a lifelong Canucks fan and they have no Stanley Cup. I think it would be really cool to bring a Stanley Cup to Vancouver. That’s part of my bucket list as a hockey player. I’d love to be part of the group to do that.”
Nice moment as TV timeout began and players spilled on to ice, Elias Pettersson grabbed Troy Stecher and hung on for several seconds while speaking to him. Stecher lost his dad, Peter, on Father's Day.
Country music on the radio. Edmonton in the rear view. Rising sun on my back. Heading west to the mountains and B.C. Time to go home. Thank you for reading and caring. Lots of great stories to come. Peace.
Fun moment at Canucks morning skate in Pittsburgh. Tocchet stopped drill because he didn’t like the crispness of passes to players attacking the net. So, Tocchet demonstrates and puts a laser on tape. Lots of hoots and cheers from players, who were clearly impressed.
Tim Horvat, Bo's dad: “After Gunnar was born, I said: ‘Bo, when Gunnar gets older, that kid is going to score goals.’ Bo stops me: ‘Dad, I’m going to tell you right now, Gunnar is going to be like Quinn Hughes.' Honest to God, that’s what he said.”
Troy Stecher could play in the NHL another 8-10 yrs. Just possesses too much character and determination to fail. Glad he got the 1st four years in Vancouver with his dad.
No Canucks took issue post-game with Wayne Simmonds forcing Alex Edler to fight. Simmonds had 77 NHL fights. Edler had 0. The Code is supposed to be about respect. There was none shown there. Want Edler to fight for hit on Hyman? Fine. But send someone else.
Everyone knows how good Scott Oake is, but I’m in awe that he can walk on to the ice and know enough about everyone’s background that he turns players into people.
Not saying, just saying. Bo Horvat wants all

to be vaccinated.
“I've had COVID before and it's no joke. This vaccine works and it's helping people not get sick. Hopefully guys realize that and go get vaccinated -- for everybody's safety.”
Had a delightful conversation today with Andrei Kuzmenko, who was introduced to golf Thursday by Canucks teammates.
“I don’t like. Oh, it's very terrible. I don't understand guys to play 6 hours, 7 hours. For me, 2 hours, thank you, finish, ‘guys, let's go.’”

As good as Brock Boeser was yesterday, today is what he has been waiting for. Duke Boeser gets to see his son play for the first time since nearly dying last summer.
Mom Laurie Boeser: “We’re embracing today, but we don’t know where we’re going.”
After his dad died, Troy Stecher discovered a beautiful letter his father wrote him but never sent.
“He was telling me how proud he was. And how there’s no straight road in this world. There are always going to be bumps. You just keep going.”
Dr. Bonnie Henry on NHL looking elsewhere for hub city: "We are doing very well. We have a good balance. But under no circumstances was I going to compromise in any way the health of people here in British Columbia, and we made that very clear."
So many poignant moments, but the roar for Ryan Kesler the most emotional one.
Kesler: “I almost started tearing up. To have those fans stand up and cheer like they used to was a pretty special feeling I’ll never forget.”
Roberto Luongo, on Hall of Fame media call: "The best part of the whole thing is that I get to go in with two of my favorite teammates of all time and two of the greatest people I know, Henrik and Daniel, so it makes it so much exciting for me to be part of it."
Canuck Elias Pettersson on teammate Nikita Zadorov instigating fight w Reese Johnson after big hit on Pettersson.
“I appreciate it so much. I don't mind a good hit, but it just shows he's going to back me up no matter what. It shows that you're playing for each other.”
J.T. Miller's finest hour as a Canuck? Certainly his bravest.
"We've tried to talk about the No. 1 priority is players' health and their families' safety, and it's almost impossible to achieve that with what they have asked us to do here."

Talked to Cammi Granato’s big sister, Christina, for a story on Cammi that will be up soon on . I couldn’t fit this into my story, but it’s so beautiful, I’m sharing it here.

I've often heard Shorty say when out with Cheech on the road: "Who has more fun than we do?"
Nobody. I will miss seeing my friends together. Never another NHL broadcast duo like John Shorthouse and John Garrett.
The Captain, Bo Horvat: “We shouldn’t hang our heads; we should learn from it. We’re going to learn from it. We all said it in the room already: ‘We can’t wait to get back next year and prove ourselves again.’”
After chasing a Stanley Cup his whole life, Vegas president George McPhee, who lost finals with Vancouver in 1994, Washington in 1998 and Vegas in 2018, said he just wishes Pat Quinn was here to see this tonight.
Biggest save of the game was Tyler Myers blocking Gustav Nyquist's point-blank shot in final seconds.
"It got me right in the balls."

“But as good as it feels to get a series win, we know we’re not done.”
Humbled that Troy Stecher thanked me during press conference tonight for the story I wrote about him losing his dad. But honestly, it is Troy's story -- and an amazing one -- and I'm grateful he shared it. If you missed it, here it is.
After his dad died, Troy Stecher discovered a beautiful letter his father wrote him but never sent.
“He was telling me how proud he was. And how there’s no straight road in this world. There are always going to be bumps. You just keep going.”
I am speechless, but that must pass because I’ve got a 1,000 words to write. The first great shift of the night from Lindholm-Garland-Joshua wins it for Vancouver.
Twice in three weeks, members of my family have been involved in accidents. Both times, strangers stopped to help, caring for them until I could. It seems at times there is a lot of crappiness in the world. But there is overwhelming goodness, too. Happy Thanksgiving.
Stunned and saddened by the loss of colleague Jason Botchford. Although we often disagreed, Jason’s talent and passion as a writer were undeniable. His clarity and conviction as a reporter allowed him to connect with readers like few others. My heart goes out to Jason’s family.
That bank pass by Pettersson was even better than the ass pass by Hughes. Most teams would love to have one guy who can make a play like that. Canucks have two.
I asked Elias Pettersson if he realized it was Mike Matheson he embarrassed in OT. He looked a long time and said: "I’m going to say no comment." Of course, he knew.
Bo Horvat spent his 26th birthday in quarantine, separated by a closed door from his wife and baby. Canucks outbreak is a people story, not a hockey one.
Dad Tim Horvat: “It's constantly on your mind. It's the parenting. you wish it was you.”
John and John are legends in our market, and both are friends, so I'm biased. But listen to the call on this and tell me Shorty isn't one of the very best in the business.
Bruce Boudreau coached pro hockey for 17 years before getting to the NHL at age 52. He is 68 and this may be his last chance. Even with the crap he has endured this season, he’d love to keep going. Hate to see it end like this.
Happy to say I saw Vasily Podkolzin walking by the rink this morning as I arrived for Canucks practice. He lives in the area. Podkolzin was stretched off the ice last night in Abbotsford, but later reassured fans via Instagram that he was alright.
Demko on what Kuzmenko brings: "He's a funny guy. I try to put myself in his shoes and if I was over there, I wouldn't say a word and this guy doesn't shut up. It's a good thing. Half the time, he leaves the room, we don't know what he said, but it's still makes us laugh."
Reminded Brock Boeser after OT winner from J.T. Miller that his linemate had nullified 4 other goals by Boeser this season, going offside or interfering with the goalie.
Boeser: "He wasn't by the net. Thank God.”
Miller: “I’m surprised I didn’t go offside before that."
Alex Edler on leaving

: "There's not enough things I can say, just how thankful I am for everything, not only the actual organization but the whole city and how good I've felt there with my family. It's a great city, great fans. Vancouver has been great to us.”
Amazing what happens when you get pucks and players to the net. If Canucks actually win this, people will remember this game from Brock Boeser forever.
After everything he has been through, Bruce Boudreau deserved a night like this to say goodbye to players and fans. Incredible emotion postgame. Bruce will cherish it forever.
For levity, JT Miller had “Conor Garland 400th NHL Game” T-shirts made for the team. Players had them on when Garland arrived today for morning skate.
Miller: “My only regret is we didn’t have one for every single person in the organization.”
Garland: “He stole my joke.”
As TV timeout began, bunch of players at Canucks bench stood and gave stick taps to the five exhausted guys who just spent 2 mins in their own zone not letting the Blues score.
Oliver Ekman-Larsson nailed COVID problem not just for Canucks, but all of us: "It's not really about hockey, it's about mental health, too. It tears you down a little bit thinking about it all the time. It's a lot of stuff on your mind, but you learn to live with it."
Another reason why NHL officiating/reviews still lack credibility. Goalie launches his stick into Pettersson on penalty shot. Four officials on the ice don’t see it. And no review. That’s embarrassing.
Canuck Thatcher Demko wore a Hockey-Fights-Cancer cap in postgame interviews. He said it was for his friend, Jacob Markstrom.
“We wanted to prove to him we’d play hard again for him. He might not have been playing, but guys were thinking about him and playing for him."
Should Brock Boeser have to do the vomit-inducing bag skate/test that he missed on the first day of training camp?
Bo Horvat: “Oh, yeah. He’s coming back, he’s going to have to do it. We’re going to make him. He’s not going to get off that easy."
#teammates
Canucks have the worst team save percentage in NHL at 87.2%. But in 3 games since he returned from injury, Thatcher Demko has stopped 104/111 shots (93.7%) and led Canucks to wins over Toronto and Dallas. So that’s what elite goaltending looks like.
So, Vancouver is a tough market. . .
Conor Garland: “I've heard that. But that stuff doesn't bother me in the slightest. You have to realize people are going to say stuff. I'm just happy to play in a market that is as enthusiastic about the team as I am.”
As exceptionally bad as loss was for Canucks, the postgame was truly extraordinary. The president talking about a rebuild, the coach wondering about professionalism of players. And this is Game 6, Day 11! Never in my 30 years covering this team.
Seeing Mullett Arena for the first time reinforces what a disgrace this is for the NHL. That’s bleacher seating. There are real hockey fans here in the desert, and I feel sorry for them. And Tempe seems like a cool place. Beautiful campus. But honestly, enough is enough. Uncle.
Said it before on calls like puck over glass, let the referees see replay or blow horn from Toronto. It’s embarrassing that NHL allows these calls to be wrong.
For what it's worth, I don't think NHL should have referees work consecutive games of same team. Eric Furlatt worked Canucks game vs DET and missed Hoglander h/s on Walman. Hoglander was probably on his radar tonight. First chance to make a call. . .
We should all relate to this. And remember this if you're disappointed about hockey games not being played.
Travis Hamonic: "Being my little kids' dad every day is the most important job I have."
Believe the changes in Vancouver will include Jim Benning and John Weisbrod out as GM and AGM. Chris Gear likely steps into an interim role. Travis Green and Nolan Baumgartner out on the coaching side. Bruce Boudreau and Scott Walker in on coaching staff.
I know Canucks players feel badly for Bruce Boudreau. But if they really want to show support for their coach, perhaps they should stop giving up breakaways and two-on-ones on ridiculous decisions.
Canucks president Jim Rutherford confirms club is investigating its handling of Tanner Pearson injury. Says he was unaware of any questions about medical care until Quinn Hughes spoke out. Rutherford wants all-parties summit to discuss what was done and why. Story coming.
And yes, Alex Mogilny, who fled the Soviet Union to join the NHL and was one of the most gifted players of his generation, deserves to be in the Hockey Hall of Fame.
Canuck Conor Garland on playing with friend and sparring partner J.T. Miller.
“Millsy is a top-five player in the world. Not many guys do what he does.”
Top five?
“He’ll be mad I didn’t say top three.”
Brock once described his dad as a “fighter” and Duke Boeser was certainly that. He gave those who loved him 12 years from the arrival of Parkinson’s and a tsunami of health challenges. It could never be long enough. But I’m glad Brock had the last month just to be a son.
Impossible not to be moved by Jacob Markstrom sharing the loss of his father after he plays on Hockey Fights Cancer day. We all share this fight. No one fights alone.
When he traded for Roberto Luongo, GM Dave Nonis said he was tired of not sleeping. He said Lou Lamoriello slept soundly every night because he had Marty Brodeur in net.
Thatcher Demko allows the Canucks to sleep well. No matter what, he'll be there for them tomorrow.
All games may be worth two points, but they are not all equal. For the Vancouver Canucks coming out of their COVID-holiday break, to extend their winning streak under Bruce Boudreau and restart their momentum with a gutsy win in Anaheim was hugely important.
