In the Souls games you might've noticed how your bloodstain doesn't always wind up at your exact location of death. It's usually a bit "further behind" than where you were.
Its exact placement can be visualized in debug as a blue orb that follows you around.

Another quirk of this 10s delay is that it doesn't play nice with unstable surfaces; Your bloodstain won't ever spawn on something like the rotating bridge.
We can see that even the red orb for your current location refuses to follow you, and blue keeps some xtra distance too.
Huh so apparently in addition to the commonly-known places that bloodstains aren't allowed, there might be some more little spots. Apparently the top of these steps are no good:
I thought maybe transitional boundaries of map were the culprit here, but seeing the red orb follow me smoothly through a fog gate location in Sen's Fortress has me thinking otherwise so IDK.
As others have suggested it does appear to be linked to full multiplayer boundaries, as it happens here again in the Undead Burg's entrance.
Pretty silly and insignificant knowledge that bloodstains can't actually be dropped in these tiny locations, but I appreciate seeing it.
Oh I never clarified where this setting is found, it's under the "draw" subfolder found inside your character c0000 menu. It's an option you can toggle near the very bottom.

Probably a convenience mechanic. If you fall into a pit and then things quickly kill you in it, maybe it's a bit nicer if you don't actually have to go all the way back for it.

so it's about 7-8 seconds behind? I always get asked by friends why it doesn't appear wherever your actual corpse was, seems most people don't consider the possibility of falling down a huge pit (ie DS1 catacombs) and having them be incredibly difficult to reach

im finally playing this franchise for the very first time and enjoying it a lit and im stoked to watch all your videos and thoughts about it now with a deeper level of understanding

No matter how bad things may get, remember that the blue orb will always be with you, following in your footsteps. Find comfort in its company and you'll never be in this alone.
