13/ UN-level action is critical The global community must ensure that the UN and other international human rights organisations take addressing caste-based gender violence seriously. Holding a UN conference on caste discrimination will be a significant step in the right direction.

12/ International data collection on caste-based violence We urge global institutions to collect disaggregated data on caste-based violence, focusing on crimes against Dalit women. This data is critical for international advocacy and national level action.

10/ Global recognition of caste-based violence as a human rights crisis: We call on international human rights bodies to recognise caste-based violence as a severe violation of international law and human rights.

9/ The high acquittal and low conviction rates for crimes against Dalit women underscore a global failure to protect the most marginalised. This is a violation of international human rights norms and must be addressed at the UN level.

8/  We ask human rights organisations and international bodies to urge India to: End impunity in cases of caste-based violence and ensure swift legal action and justice for Dalit women.

7/ Feminist solidarity on a global scale: We urge feminist movements worldwide to show solidarity with Dalit women. Bringing their experiences to the forefront will globalise the conversation on caste and gender issues.

6/ We call on the UN Human Rights Council to adopt and implement UN Principles & Guidelines on discrimination based on work and descent. This should be followed by an international conference focused on caste-based discrimination.

5/ Advocacy from International Human Rights Bodies International human rights bodies, including the UN Human Rights Council @UN_HRC, must actively advocate with govt to eliminate caste & gender-based violence & ensure swift & fair trials in cases of atrocities against Dalit women.

4/ UN Agencies must address caste-based gender violence: @UN_Women @UNICEF & @UNDP should directly integrate addressing caste and gender-based violence into their programming in countries where caste discrimination persists. Intersectionality must guide their efforts.

3/ UN Minority Forum must focus on Dalit Women: We call on the UN Minority Forum to prioritise addressing violence against Dalit women and girls. Given the alarming increase in caste-based and gender violence, the international community must act urgently to protect Dalit women.

2/ Intersectionality of oppression Dalit women face compounded oppression—caste, patriarchy, and class—making them particularly vulnerable to sexual violence. This is an urgent global human rights concern.

1/ Global call to end caste-based violence The rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor in Kolkata (Aug 2024) have sparked nationwide outrage. Yet similar violence against Dalit women often goes unnoticed. We must act on caste and gender-based violence at an international level.
