I was laid off from Teen Vogue today along with multiple other staffers, and today is my last day. certainly more to come from me when the dust has settled more, but to my knowledge, after today, there will be no politics staffers at Teen Vogue.

The thing I always liked about wokeness is it has this sort of lawyerly universal calculus of grievances. Like "we consider it self evident that if a white girl wearing a headdress is cultural appropriation than so too is a man wearing a kimono" It's logical but also silly

If you're unfortunate enough to be using R there's around a 30-50% performance gain to be had by recompiling it for your architecture. Vector units have gotten a lot wider since "amd64"

Productivity tip: if you don't want to program something ask an LLM to do it and the code will be so awful you'll write it yourself out of spite

The hype around uv is funny because that enthusiasm for performance somehow doesn't translate to the rest of the python ecosystem which clearly sucks shit

My kid keeps asking why I'm always talking about the graphics when I play a game I just think it's neat a computer can generate such verisimilitude after spending all day on the javascript powered world wide web

I read a lot of Marshall McLuhan when I was in high school. I find myself bringing him up more and more whenever anyone talks about the slopification of the internet and how weird things are getting

Continuing to confound my wife with my brilliant cognitive strategy of always putting things in the same place so I can find them later.

Someone I worked with used to refer to these guys and VLC as DCS, Drunken College Students, because a lot of their belligerence on mailing lists and whatnot made more sense that way.
All the folks that are running ffmpeg including the one who is behind the account are actually super friendly people. Yes they are cracked af and I would say that they are too much into the technical stuff and much less into the "talking to people" especially publicly.

Twitter is cool because I thought someone was making fission reactors but it turns out it's just lamps. Can't complain.

People around here use the term "shit show" a lot. What is a shit show? Are people juggling pieces of shit? Are they taking shits? Who is the patron of these shit shows? Where can I see one?

Thinking back, Software Engineering class was the funniest shit. Just a bunch of grad students who never wrote functioning software in their entire lives talking about design patterns and shit. I wonder if I can get my money back

I stopped playing these games when matchmaking became common. I want to play against the best players and learn from them imo tiers hack the shitty gameplay of strong hitscan weapons If the time from first sight to death is 16ms, what are you going to learn? It's not fun
The fastest my phone line could go was 14.4kbps. I got really good at 400ms ping QuakeWorld - choke points - predict routes by how players move - use splash damage - listen - predict location 1-2 sec later on first sight - players cluster near good items - avoid walls/windows

In Unreal Tournament a lot of the walls are curved in the corner. If you fire a Flak shot into them they'll bounce at 90 degrees It also has a crazy sophisticated ray-based audio engine, so you can echo locate using reverb. Unfortunately it distorts a lot on cheap headphones
