For some reason I've gotten a lot of followers recently so I figure I'll introduce myself. I go by Quinn or my dharma name Ikkyu. Some folks call me doc. I'm a psychologist and an ordained zen monk. I like film, idols, anime, vtubers, stuff like that. Nice to meet you!

Many people touch the surface of something and immediately believe they've got a depth of understanding. The older you get, the more careful you should be, but it's not always the case.

I know a teacher who once walked out of a chant, exclaiming, "what are we, a cult?!" The original Ikkyu once said: "Don't hesitate, get laid, that's wisdom. Sitting around chanting? What crap."

There are people who come to temple every weekend and faithfully chant the gatha of atonement without any recognition as to why. What a waste! Do you even know what you're atoning for? Do you even know why we chant? Hurry and wake up already.

Getting caught up in the trappings of religion is useless. Why do I chant? Practical benefit. Why do I light incense? Practical benefit. Why do I bow? Practical benefit. It's not enough to ooh and aah at symbolism. The symbolism should accompany the practical benefit.

Once, a younger monk asked me what I do with it these days, since I don't need it for ceremonies right now. My teacher has his hanging on the wall but I have a more practical use for mine. I like to tie a rag to the end and use it to clean places I can't reach!

For my shuso hossen, the ceremony in which I became a "senior monk" and the head monk of my temple, I had to build a staff called a shippei. Before the ceremony, a snake got into my room at the temple and I used the shippei to herd it out. I was surprised by how useful it was!

Actually, it's like a powerful form of accountability. If I eat more than one, I might get really sick, so I have to limit how much chocolate I eat.

My grandmother got a bunch of expensive chocolate before she died and it wound up in my hands. All the chocolate has tree nuts, which I'm allergic to, but in such low concentration that it only lightly irritates my throat if I eat one... It might be worth it...

To be frank, I did enjoy it. I was just surprised that she pointed it out. Beautiful people are always welcome to my blood.

The idea that there's an objective morality and it just happens to be yours is the most childish idea in the world.

You can't even educate these people.
In the first year I was dating my now husband I went, "I know morality is subjective, but..." and he laughed and goes, "Morality is not subjective. Everyone knows evil exists. Are they going to debate about subjective morality when someone murders their family in cold blood right
