I was at Johnson’s Lock at the Regent’s Canal in London and saw this very prominent heron. It then flew to the balcony of some nearby flats and perched near a mop. I would love to have been here when the occupants opened their balcony door!

On Saturday I satisfied my inner bus geek by taking old buses on the #Imberbus services over the normally private military land on Salisbury Plain to Tilshead where I indulged my inner church geek by visiting the Grade I listed church of St Thomas a Becket

Millennium Green, Sonning Common, Oxfordshire. Sunset last night. It’s good to be able to see sunsets now without having to stay up really late

Feeding the local cygnet. It was very hissy at first but soon accepted the duck food I gave it. I guess that it’s good that it’s learned to be assertive . River Thames, Caversham.

Some birds from Hyde Park in London on Monday: black swan; young herring gull; bar-headed goose; a pair of gadwall with one of them pecking at a passing moorhen for no apparent reason

I am on the Northumbrian coast and had a wonderful birding trip to the Inner Farne islands. I was attacked by the nesting Arctic terns which is a highlight of any birdwatcher’s career! Also an Atlantic puffin and a cliff full of nesting guillemots

Some cows and calves at Coley Park in Reading. The public footpath took me quite near them. They looked at me curiously but weren’t otherwise bothered.

Good to visit St James’s Park in London yesterday. Even though it was quite hot, the birds were cool; black swan; Ross’s goose sifting the water; grey heron; greylag gosling putting its neck through some netting which is meant to protect a wildflower patch

I was watching one of my local swan families yesterday. I was concerned that the number of cygnets had dropped from 5 to 4, but then I noticed that one of them was taking a ride on Mum’s back ❤️.River Thames, Reading

Grey herons I saw yesterday in Hyde Park in London. The regular bird at the Lido Cafe was looming over the tables, waiting for someone to leave their plate unguarded. Most people kept away but a couple took the nearest table and chatted to it. These are my kind of people.

Video of a spotted flycatcher using a gravestone as a launch pad from which to hawk for insects. Video taken on Monday at the birding paradise that is Ondrejský cintorín (St Andrew’s Cemetery) in Bratislava, Slovakia. There were also some collared flycatchers

The lido cafe at Hyde Park in London provides many temptations to the local birdlife. This heron scared off some people eating pies who moved inside the cafe, muttering. The heron managed to nab a chip. A magpie and some starlings ate a healthier salad.

I saw these two male mallards at Christ Church College in Oxford the other day. I think they were elderly college fellows passing the time of day
