Twitter has become 99% useless to me, and lately its serving me mostly uninteresting content. So I’m going to say bye bye to this platform. Sincere thanks to all the interesting people I’ve met, and so long. @ianring will continue to exist for posterity and contact purposes. 👋

Important question of the day. Is the “know it” from “happy and you know it” that appears just before “really want to show it”, is that a iv minor or IV major? What pitch is “know”? Flat six or major six? Answer without looking it up please.

It shouldn't be this hard to find a decent pair of over-ear noise cancelling headphones with a built in mic, that I can pick up curbside from a store and not wait several days for shipping. Except, oh yeah I forgot, I'm in Ontario

What would it mean to have a frequency in Hz that is a negative integer? Or an imaginary number?

Hey music theory twitter. I've been scouring books for most of the morning. Can you help me find citations: 1) who/when did people start using letters for pitch names 2) and settled on "A B C" in the pattern we use today, eg C being the white keys, semitones between E/F and B/C

Imagemagick experts! I have a little blurb of text being rendered onto an image. I want one word in the text to be in red, while the rest of the text is black. I can't fake it with multiple text blobs, because of word wrapping, kerning, aligning and all that. Is this possible?

Choking to death on food has probably been an evolutionary pressure that evolved our enjoyment of eating among other people. Restaurants are not just nutrition providers, they also serve an emotional need hardwired because our airway and swallow-tube are the same orifice.

Achievement unlocked! A YouTube commenter splained that my videos would be improved using a music theory concept that I invented, and not only were they correct, and explained it well, but it’s a concept I was already using to generate the video content. Yesssss! #prouddad

So I wondered what if I combine sine wave partials built off a C#, but then put them over the fundamental sine C. I'm sure it would sound gross but who's done this? I want to hear it.

Rendering chord symbols in a weird font with an awkward bit of old software, and I had to replace sharp accidentals with number signs "#". And it made me feel icky, like I was using a crappy old typewriter. At least I didn't have to use "b" instead of a flat.

And then insomuch as a tonicized triad infers a diatonic key, and a diatonic key prescribes its triads, there are both cooperating and conflicting senses of consonance at work.

I’ve picked through the opening chapter of Cohn’s “Audacious Euphony” several times and I thought I understood the point. But today for some reason it really clicked - we have two simultaneous perceptions of consonance in triads, but only one perception of consonance in keys.

Common Tone Consonance would assess that C major triad and D minor triad are not in affinity, because they don’t share common tones. But Diatonic Inclusion Consonance says yeah, they are friends because they both belong to the C Major diatonic scale so go ahead and use them

Egads it just clicked. Common-tone Consonance and Diatonic Inclusion Consonance are in agreement when examining scales, but they are at odds when examining triads. That’s why chords and keys, while cooperating to make harmony, have different freedoms and opportunities.
