I think it's relevant to share this: got an email that I can get the Astra Zeneca vaccine at a pharmacy in BC today. So, did my own risk assessment. A key factor: among the medical doctors I trust, every one has advised all of us to take the first shot we're offered. And I will.

Went into a small Vancouver restaurant that has a sign "Masks strongly recommended". Watched people read it and enter. Every person put on a mask as they entered, without any issue. Not newsworthy, I guess, but in an unremarkable way, I thought it was interesting.

I'm not trying to change the minds of those who aren't open to that. But when vilification of media is high, it's important we're not silent. Many people are relying on our coverage. We're constantly assessing different points of view. We can disagree without personal attacks.

Has this ever happened in the NHL? A coach, likely in his last game before being fired, warmly cheered by the hometown fans (Bruce, there it is!). In an emotional post-game news conference, Canucks coach Bruce Boudreau said he was moved by their support and is grateful.

I know it's been a week of very difficult news stories so it may seem odd for me to bring your attention to a too-short obit on The National tonight. But the passing of Burt Bacharach deserves a few moments of reflection. And after, maybe listen to a few of his masterful songs.

Lots of conversations in our newsrooms about how to sensitively report on the very difficult story from Manitoba. We will be taking care with what we say and the pictures we show on The National from the deadly bus and truck crash near Dauphin.

Vancouver moment: getting my hair cut and across the room, one of my fave celebrities - for whom I've got a bajillion questions - is doing the same. Took every ounce of willpower (milligram?) to stay in my seat and not intrude. But still enjoyed my almost brush with fame.

Like a lot of people with relatives in Atlantic Canada, I have been trying all day to make contact. I'm not sending this to make it about me but just a reminder to us all that even in our hi-tech, highly connected country, one big storm (or quake or fire) can disrupt so much.

"Ian is a hack" "...told a straight up lie" "Bonnie bootlicker". I've learned Covid on X/Twitter encourages periodic volleys of misinformation towards, among others, journalists and doctors. I've also learned there's no room for debate. You're either with them or against them.…

A friend and colleague is retiring today, after a long career. He says he's never seen the hate - and called it hate - directed to the media as he did covering the protest story yesterday. I wonder if those yelling saw the story his team did? Fair, accurate and important.

A beautiful February day in Vancouver. Spring in just over a month. The promise of better days.

Have heard about the Rock of Gibraltar all my life. This morning, got to look out from the top. A small British outpost, on the Iberian Peninsula.

Mentioned on @checkupcbc the immense popularity of- and backlash to - the song Patio Lanterns. Then the singer himself, Kim Mitchell, called in. In a classic Canadian moment, he thanked us for the mention and said he could relate to people who have heard the song too many times.

I love the look on people's faces when they see someone walking with a bouquet. I may just do this periodically for the smiles. 💐
