Maybe it’s the Lunar New Year, but it’s always a good time to use my favorite mug. It looks like a mahjong tile and the character means starting or departing. It’s part of the traditional new year greeting, too. 恭喜發財 (good fortune and wealth be yours!)

I’m a fan of this director (Mamoru Hosoda), and asked Hiro to join me at today’s matinee. Many of the characters are from Shakespeare’s Hamlet, but most of the movie is set in hell. I can understand why the response in Japan was lackluster. The story of Hamlet isn’t well known.

Rejections, as a rule, suck. And yet… this rejection from an awesome small press demonstrates that readers are picking up what I’m laying down. Last year’s revisions were worth it. Crying in a Foreign Language will find a home, either with an agent or a small press, this year.

I had some crummy medical news yesterday and am waiting for an appointment with a specialist. My brain went into psychosomatic overdrive today but when I came home from work, Hiro told me he saved half an egg salad sandwich for me. I broke down in tears. He loves me.

I’m grateful for the reminder that Takaichi has *never* been in favor of marriage equality. Some voters in Japan might not realize that, but her status as the first woman PM doesn’t change the fact that she and her party have long been socially conservative.

Watching Season Two of The Boyfriend. I remember how easy it was to make gay friends in Japan back in the 80s and 90s. Memories keep my heart warm.

This is sixty! It’s traditional to wear red for this particular milestone birthday in Japan and I asked my husband to make the vest for me. He delivered!
