Hey all 👋 I wrote a book with a design friend. It's a handbook that covers the five major product design methods and the lesser-known alternatives. There wasn't a good resource that explains them all (with pros & cons, etc), so we decided to create it.

Design leaders: a great gift for designers on your team who, like me back in the day, could get a little overly rigid on process when feeling overwhelmed. A really frank/honest overview like this would have helped me realize sooner that there's no such thing as perfect or correct.

When I click on an article and end up on a product's blog, I don't like the feeling that I've been suckered into their content marketing funnel.

Worked so well that I think I’ll do this for other platforms.

I’m adding things back in *only* if there is some value. Honestly, it’s so much better and I feel back in control.

My connections are still there, but no more FOMO or feeling more imposter syndrome (than the normal amount) because I don’t have a fancy title or experiencing so much noise I can’t find anything valuable.

I figured out how to make LinkedIn much better (less FOMO and imposter syndrome, more value.). I unfollowed *everything*: All of the people and organizations that LinkedIn had me auto follow at one point, without any choice on my part. #ProTip #nofomo #impostersyndrome.

P.S. I didn’t make up the term 'tooler.' The first time I saw it was in a blog post by @Vonster (a long time ago).

I think it’s interesting to consider what would happen if we shifted from being toolers to thinkers and taught people differently. I’m curious if you agree with this. I’m more interested if you don’t agree and why 😉.

My hypothesis is that if I were to examine (for example) how product design is taught, you would find it’s mostly weighted toward teaching the tools and less on the models of thinking.

The tech and design industry has an obsession with tools because we build a lot of tools for other people. An effect of this myopic view is that there is a ton of content focused on tools—less on ways to think & make better design decisions—resulting in solution sameness.

When you are mostly focused on the tools of the trade, you are limiting the kinds of problems you are able to solve. Tools constrain your solutions in ways you may not realize.

I don’t have a good definition of what I would bundle under thinking yet, but I would see it similar to how Charlie Munger phrases it, as a "*latticework* of mental models" for (in this case) designing products.

A tool can be defined here as an app (@figmadesign, @ProtoPieApp, @InVisionApp), framework (@tailwindcss, @reactjs), methodology (Sprint by @jakek, Atomic design by @brad_frost, Lean Startup by @ericries), etc.

Something I’ve been thinking about: . We all begin as a tooler (a tool reliant person—sometimes getting stuck there) and then later evolve into more of a critical thinker within our chosen career. Are we all too obsessed with tools? What is the impact?. More thoughts in the 🧵.

I've noticed a number of people using the word "crisp" in meetings lately in place of "clear." Is this a thing?.
