Tomorrow, they will head out into even colder, remote blue ice zones to map ice thickness and collect near-surface samples. Tough work in ideal conditions. Best of luck to the team on this inspiring mission! πͺ#ClimateResearch #Fieldwork #BlueIce #PolarScience

πβοΈ Glaciers in the Patagonian #Andes are shrinking: 34% reached peak melt by 2020, and 68% may lose >50% of their volume by 2100. New study led by @rodaguayo1 using 1920 scenarios finds reference climate is the key uncertainty in runoff projections ποΈπ¬.
tc.copernicus.org
Abstract. Glaciers are retreating globally and are projected to continue to lose mass in the coming decades, directly affecting downstream ecosystems through changes in glacier runoff. Estimating the...

It gets warmer and #glaciers melt. We knew that, right?.But it seems that it may be more than we thought so far (e.g. latest #IPCC report). Find out more in our latest study:
tc.copernicus.org
Abstract. Projecting the global evolution of glaciers is crucial to quantify future sea-level rise and changes in glacier-fed rivers. Recent intercomparison efforts have shown that a large part of...

π¨ Paper alert. New research by Etienne Legrain: How do the fastest, most intense natural CO2 variations over a century compare to human emissions? Analyses of Antarctic ice cores show they are at least 10 times slower and 10 times less amplified. ππ

Nature Geoscience - Centennial-scale releases of atmospheric CO2 occurred during periods of high obliquity over the past 500,000, suggesting a link between external forcing and atmospheric CO2...

Last week, part of the BGlacier team conducted fieldwork in #Switzerland, measuring the mass balance and surface height of the #Morteratsch and #Pers glaciers. After a warm summer, mass loss is again significant, but less severe than the past years due to heavy spring snowfall,
