In food, xanthan gum helps thicken, stabilise, and emulsify. In cell culture, it stops organoids fusing together - drastically improving the yield. This means scientists can produce animal-free research models with far greater efficiency. Read more:.

Every year, more than 2,000 monkeys are sacrificed in UK laboratories. They face experiments that are often brutal. We want to see an end to the shocking practice of using animals in this way. #InternationalPrimateDay

Researchers rely on academic journals to spread the word about their scientific discoveries, influence policy, inspire new studies, and get more funding for future studies. That's why it's a HUGE problem if the people who publish these journals expect to see animal testing.

The 'smoking beagles' scandal of the 1970s brought huge public attention to the horrors of animal testing. But dogs are STILL used in UK medical research. This #NationalDogDay we are highlighting that THOUSANDS of dogs are still used in medical experiments here in Britain.

Scientists need funding to help them transition away from animal models. Without this funding, medical research will continue to involve the use of live animals and animal products.

We recently found this letter from Linda McCartney from 1994 in our charity's archive!. It's been nearly 30 years since Linda wrote this letter, and we're still fighting animal experiments. We'll be digging out more interesting bits from the archive soon. 😊

In silico research is the name given to research conducted via a computer. Some models can help identify new drug candidates, whilst others simulate biological processes. 💊

Findings from animal studies often do not translate when applied to humans. That's why we call the animal-free methods that our scientists develop 'human-relevant'. It means they can produce research results that are applicable to people, not lab mice.

We're glad to see that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) will stop funding new research grant applications which only use animal testing. We hope to see similar changes here in the UK!.

"85% of human DNA is shared with mice" is a claim often used to justify rodent research models. But similarity in DNA sequence =/= similarity in biology. Even small genetic differences matter. That's why we're so focused on funding human-relevant approaches to medical research.

School may be out for summer, but research on animals never stops. 3 million scientific procedures are carried out every year. That means there's over 7,000 more animals used in scientific experiments or genetic alterations every single day.

We want to see all animal experiments replaced with non-animal research methods. That's why we fund it. Studies involving animals and their products receive plenty of funding. So we provide financial support researchers need to explore and develop innovative alternatives.

Genetic modification. Organ removals or transplants. Exposure to dangerous/painful chemicals. Forced breeding. Infection with disease. Food, water, or sleep deprivation. Repeated drugging. Electrocution. These are just some of the procedures that laboratory animals can face.
