FREE PALESTINE 🇵🇸 CEASEFIRE NOW l NZ Wars Stories of Tauranga Moana l Mata Reports | Gone By Lunchtime | Aotearoa Media Collective | Ngāi Tahu/Kahungunu
Here’s our latest Mata story 👀
Tina Olsen-Ratana is a landowner who’s landless. For over a century her whenua has been caught in perpetual leases. As NZ debates the notion of ‘one law for all’ we look at the impact of the perpetual leases on Māori.
Shout out to the old white guys who roll their eyes when Māori reference beliefs such as taniwha or wāhi tapu but are up in arms if anyone transgresses the tapu representation of their imaginary friend Santa Claus

What’s with media running the “who is Nanaia Mahuta?” line? Did you somehow manage miss her during the last 1/4 century she’s been in parliament? Or that she has moko tehe? Or that she’s a daughter of the Kiingitanga? What NZ have you been reporting on?
When Māori are no longer the sickest, the poorest, the most imprisoned and have the same life expectancy as Pākehā- then let’s have a conversation about whether we still need the Māori seats. Meanwhile let’s just get on with fixing it.
Whenever we have natural disasters marae are the first to open their doors to the entire community, when the government fails to deal with homelessness it’s marae that sleep, feed and home the needy. This tweet is classic racism dressed up as giving a f$&k about the public.
The Government's $96 million spend on marae renovations has nothing to do with creating jobs. It's classic pork-barrel politics dressed up as a COVID-19 response.
Well this is deeply concerning “The caretaker government had sought agreement from the opposition before calling for a ceasefire, but did not get it, Hipkins said”
Does anyone else think
@crusadersrugby
using a Māori design to minimise their decision to keep their racist name post the Chch terror massacre is just another abuse?
Media freedom is the cornerstone of democracy. A politician threatening a journalist over their question line should be treated as a very serious issue as we head towards election day.
Winston Peters: Thank you Jack, you've just made a hopeless case here, a good case for us to make sure we get the broadcasting portfolio after this election.
Jack Tame: Is that a threat, Mr Peters?
Peters: No it's not a threat, it's a promise
This outbreak may be the defining moment for this government’s relationship with Māori. If it doesn’t pull every lever at its disposal to protect the lives of Māori, Delta will make Foreshore and Seabed look like a two bubble picnic at Pt Chev.
Proud of the stand Māori journalists are taking on this issue.
Kawea Te Rongo stands in solidarity with journalists covering Gaza conflict as death toll climbs.
After standing on the sidelines watching tens of millions of dollars being poured into private media outlets to protect the plurality of voice for the rest of NZ, Māori are expected to be rationalised down to one news service. This is the ghettoisation of Māori journalism.
Free speech isn’t a human right it’s a white privileged. Case and point - Mike Smith, Moana Jackson and Tame Iti don’t get ‘breaking news’ alerts alongside Mike Hosking because they don’t get given platforms in national publications. Maybe you should form a coalition about that.
The old colonists are dying out, and nothing can save them, Our plain duty, as good, compassionate tangata whenua and tangata tiriti, is to smooth down their dying pillow.
(Maurice Williamson complains Te Reo Māori posters are 'objectionable') ()
Forever grateful to this amazingly selfless workforce. I hope they get the deal they deserve ♥️ Nurses and midwives have called off their planned strikes for Thursday after a community case of Covid-19 in Auckland led to a nationwide lockdown.
I wish people would be as outraged about the housing crisis in Ōpōtiki as they are about the tangi.

Only Māori have the ‘right’ to speak on the marae, all others are afforded the privilege. Whether wāhine speak on the pae is an ongoing conversation being had amongst iwi, not one to be foisted upon them by those who don’t whakapapa to that marae. Great commentary
@MaikiSherman
What an incredible hui today. So many important take discussed, so many remarkable speakers and thinkers. Kāre e ārikarika aku mihi ki te Kiingitanga me ngā puhi moana ariki o Tainui. A compelling reminder of what a powerful force the Kiingitanga is for Māori unity🖤🤍❤️
It says a lot about our attitude towards WoC and domestic violence in this country when one of our biggest RnB stars publicly shares her harrowing story of DV on social media and not a single media outlet picks up on it.

Interesting how many of the people who are outraged about Ngāpuhi not ceding speaking rights on their marae are the same folk who believe Ngāpuhi happily ceded their sovereignty to the Crown 🤔
He iwi kotahi tātou is not a mantra for assimilation. It doesn’t mean we all have to act, think and live the same way. It means we need to respect each other’s cultural difference and values and strive as one for a just and equitable society. That’s what true nationhood is about.
Has anyone noticed that the people who complain about cancel culture usually say it in response to the backlash they experience when they've just tried to cancel Māori culture?

! You publish a piece criticising Māori for supposedly not giving women a voice when you know full well Māori are under represented in your own organisation. Sort your own house before you tell Māori what to do in theirs. Start by replacing Fran w/ a Māori woman.
Judith Collins throwing down with the fragility. A bit off brand for Crusher. Twistier than an acrobat when you can turn legitimate questions about a lack of diversity into the victimisation of white middle class women.
Tensions flared over race relations again today at Parliament with outspoken National MP Judith Collins saying she was "sick of being demonised" for her ethnicity.
Now is also a good time to talk about why

drug tested applicants for the exhibition’s kaiarahi roles (positions targeted towards Reo speakers). They weren’t required to operate heavy machinery etc just talk to folks bilingually about art.
The pigeon situation at my house is getting out of hand. Since I helped the one with the dart in her neck, her whanaunga have moved in.. now they’re straight up disrespecting my bubble.
Kingi Taurua was a patriot, a gentleman, a raconteur, a champion of te reo, a protector of the treaty, a bastion of Māori broadcasting and a tūturu Ngāpuhi rangatira. I’ll miss all these things about him but most of all I’ll miss his laughter & swearing. Kia au te moe e kara ♥️

Least we forget Netanyahu was up on corruption and fraud charges and Israel was tearing itself apart before October 7. Now it’s unified in its mission to destroy Gaza. Who benefits the most from this conflict?
Remarkable how the supposed free speech brigade are unfailingly outraged by people exercising free speech. I don’t think that’s how it’s supposed to work guys 🤷🏻♀️

While we’re on the subject of tikanga and the right to speak - Looking forward to mainstream media columns and opinion pieces voicing outrage on the silencing of

in the House of Representatives due to archaic parliamentary rules.
Speaker Trevor Mallard has told Māori Party co-leader Rawiri Waititi he will not call him in the House while he is not wearing a tie and that he must wear one tomorrow. Waititi replied saying he was wearing “Māori business attire” incl his taonga. Speaker not convinced.

The Māori culture is so alive, it is exciting - and no wonder why, when there is a threat to a Māori way of life and being, Māori take affirmative action.

God I miss the days of our smug hermit kingdom. It’s funny how those who hated it are now complaining about the current situation - like somehow having Delta prowling around the country was going to be better than us being able to live relatively normal lives.
“Those jumping to the defence of Judith Collins over speaking rights on the marae simply expose themselves as lacking cultural competency at best, and a sad sense of white fragility at worst”
