It happened again in 1986, when “Somewhere Out There” from AN AMERICAN TAIL lost to “Take My Breath Away” from Top Gun. This used to be much more common. It happened numerous times in the 80s alone.

The last time a Grammy Song of the Year nominee lost the Oscar for Best Original Song to a track NOT nominated for Song of the Year was 1998. That’s when “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” from ARMAGEDDON lost to “When You Believe” from THE PRINCE OF EGYPT.
