Our new @NatureClimate paper shows where and why fire changes soil carbon and demonstrates sensitivity rises with aridity. The carbon sequestration potential in savanna soils speaks to the need for their preservation, and not their replacement by forests.

Nature Climate Change - Fire impacts soil organic carbon stocks, in addition to aboveground biomass, yet changes are not well constrained. This study shows that more soil carbon is lost from drier...

There are better ways to kill or discourage pest rodents. Rat poison is killing our beloved native owls and tawny frogmouths – and that's the tip of the iceberg https://t.co/jXC8HDO7Bo via @ConversationEDU

There’s shocking new evidence of rodenticide poisoning in Australia’s nocturnal predatory birds. High concentrations of the active ingredients were found in 92% of the 60 dead birds they tested.

And here is another graph comparison to show that the most burned hectares in Australia occur right after big La Niña years https://t.co/4BlhdePtVJ
The worst fire years (hectares burned) in Australia were right after the extraordinary La Nina in 2010-11 (based on satellite-AVHRR). About 100 Million ha burned in 2011 and 2012. The last 3 years of La Nina have been less extreme, but plenty of grass fuel to burn in dry season
