For the first time in 30-plus years my heart is not in this job. Had no words yesterday. Have plenty to say now all in support of Josh and everything he's done for us, for the athletes, for the readers. Feel like taking my ball and going home.
There are so many great sporting events involving area teams this weekend -- two state championship games, two of New York's top-ranked basketball teams playing, a legendary coach going for the Section 1 wins record.
I'm sorry to say that I won't see any of it...

Do me a favor before we all get neck deep in the playoffs ... say thank you to your coaches. A lot of the content we produce is not possible without these folks taking a few minutes at the end of a long day to report games or answer our many questions.
The county executives from across the Hudson Valley (Section 1 and 9) have issued a joint statement. High risk sports are approved to proceed. This applies to interscholastic, club and recreation teams.
Almost done with the local reaction story. According to Section 1 executive director Todd Santabarbara, this guidance applies to football, volleyball, cheerleading and boys lacrosse, as well. And there is time enough to play all three remaining seasons in some form.
I’m hitting the pause button today and joining colleagues across the country in a walkout. We are protesting decisions by Gannett leadership that have decimated our newsroom. Our readers deserve better. We deserve better.
This just in from Section 1 boys soccer coordinator Matty Allen ... Daniel D'Ippolito (Somers) and Milton Mancias-Magana (Mamaroneck) have been named All-American.
People need to come to grips that all seasons we’re going to be impacted regardless of the game plan. The way things are going, if somebody offers you a chance to play 12 lacrosse games followed by a sectional tournament, sign up. Let’s not be greedy.
ICYMI: Wait, so high school athletic fields are safe for non-affiliated camps and club teams but not for resident student-athletes? The state needs to explain.

My last word on this, I spent 15 years covering NCAA & NBA basketball. I got to meet many of the best players from this area from multiple generations. If they had a chance to play at the County Center, the experience ranks among their fondest memories.
We are unable to provide the level of local sports coverage that once made other parts of the state envious. The constant layoffs & furloughs far outweigh the sporadic & minimal raises. It’s time to make some noise.
Out to dinner with a special lady who for the last 25 years has kept it together on the home front while I jetted from one NBA or NFL city to the next. There was never a complaint when the computer showed up at the dinner table so I could update a loud scoreboard, either.🍾
All four Section 1 teams have advanced to the NYSPHSAA semifinals - Mamaroneck, Somers, Westlake and Hamilton. It happened in 2016, too. All four of those teams came home with state titles - New Rochelle, Somers, Hastings and North Salem.
If you're a student-athlete and were planning to hang with friends this weekend, find something else to do. Put your game face on. Hide in your room like your season depends on it.

To all the people railing about shortening the spring season, please stop. What is the goal of high school sports? Participation. Participation. Participation. And if that means more kids playing fewer games, so be it.
It’s a final: New Rochelle beats McQuaid Jesuit 28-0 to win the
@NYSPHSAA
Class AA state championship.
@NewRoFootball
finishes 13-0 to complete the program’s first unbeaten season in the state tournament era. It’s the third state title in New Ro history.
Much to be thankful for. I'm grateful to the coaches who responded to an endless strong of emails and kept me in the loop, the players who endured the anxiety then gave us something to celebrate and the readers who supported our efforts all season. Be well. 🦃⚽️🍺 Enjoy!
⚽️Taking a couple of days off to reset, but wanted to express gratitude to the coaches and players for all of the assists this season. Also need to say thank you to the readers who checked in daily. It was a season to remember, for sure.⚽️
⚽️ We are officially teetering. Positive cases are showing up in schools. Putnam Valley just postponed weekend games. Pearl River is hoping to resume the season next Wednesday. If you are passionate about soccer, get those masks off your chins.
Congratulations to Mount Vernon basketball coach Bob Cimmino and Yorktown lacrosse coach Jim Turnbull who have been voted into the Westchester Sports Hall of Fame along with Ali Marpet (Hastings), Sammy Maldonado (Harrison) and Margaret 'Mugssy' Fraina (Yonkers).
The
@NYSPHSAA
this week essentially petitioned Gov. Cuomo for authorization to allow offseason conditioning to begin Aug. 24. Waiting patiently for a response, knowing that matters of education come before sports.
Here is your large-school, all-state team: Brian Coughlan, Pearl River; Drew Lasher, Somers; Yusuf Hafez, Byram Hills; Julian Brooks, Nyack; Michael Traynor, Rye; Liam O’Reilly, Mamaroneck; Nolan Lenaghan, Ossining.
The NFL needs to ban the Eagles from Sunday Night Football for a couple years. How do you take that approach with a chance to knock a divisional rival out of the playoffs? That was disgraceful.
The CHS varsity football team all donated money to buy Caleb, a member of the team, a varsity letterman’s jacket. Today they presented it to him in class in front of his classmates, teachers, staff and family. This is what it’s all about!!!

Confirmed that DOH representatives from Westchester, Rockland, Putnam and Dutchess met today in order to review issues with high-risk sports. It's unclear when they might release details, but I'm told they are not likely to require additional protocols.
There were 40 writers & editors in sports when I joined The Journal News years ago. It was an exciting job. It still is. A mind-boggling provincial decision in December to eliminate a sports editor who had a profound impact on the bottom line left us with 3 full-time reporters.
This decision got easier as the playoffs unfolded. What a run.

Back to work. First day of the 2021 football season. Depth will not be an issue at Stepinac, which has a record 80 players on varsity. There are 50 more on JV and 50 more on freshman team.
For what it's worth and based upon watching Fairport and Greece Athena in one game, I think Ossining and Rye were the second best Class AA and Class A teams in the state.

12 years of marriage. 12 years of sorta, kinda hoping our anniversary doesn’t fall on Championship Weekend.
Fortunately, I’m married to the person who totally gets it.
We’ll spend the day together; me broadcasting and her faithfully listening for 12 hours straight.

Reducing or eliminating pay is a failure to acknowledge all the hours invested prior to the first day of practice. ... And it’s only Step 1 of the cutbacks yet to come.
Congratulations to

on being awarded the SOATS Ambassador Award. This honor goes to a non-AT who has demonstrated support of Section 1 Athletic Trainers and promoted athlete safety in Section 1! Thank you Mike for your continued support.

I just updated this following a conversation with Section 1 executive director Todd Santabarbara ... 12 games for hockey and basketball followed by regional playoffs.
Rye won in the most Rye way imaginable. There were a couple of hiccups, but mostly there was unflappable confidence and timely execution.
My game story.

The local sports landscape will not be the same. It’s a sad day for all in this shrinking business. All of you will be missed by your friends and competitors on the sidelines.
