The historic night the Blues beat San Jose to advance to the Stanley Cup Final, Arianna Dougan’s mother received a text message at 2:40 a.m.
It was from Vladimir Tarasenko.
He wrote: “She is in my heart.”
For The St. Louis Post-Dispatch:
This is Miguel Perez in the postgame press conference after St. Louis City SC won to start 3-0-0. He is 17. He is from St. Louis. He started in tonight's game for St. Louis. He has class Monday morning at Pattonville High School.
Remember Laila? She was the optimistic disease-fighting kid who inspired the 2019
@StLouisBlues
during their Stanley Cup run. Well, Laila is now 15, playing hockey herself and … guess what? HER team just won a Cup! My column:
From the Sept. 18, 1995, Minneapolis Star-Tribune.
In the
@Twins
notes: Reliever Pat Mahomes left the team Sunday to be with his girlfriend in Texas. She just delivered their child, a boy. Mahomes will return to the team today in Kansas City.
I feel bad for Danny Mac… It stinks he didn’t get to make that call on TV… Coincidentally, it was his inning on radio, but he let Rooney do the at-bat… A classy Rooney thanked Danny afterwards
Meet Polo Ascencio. He was once a custodian, listening to baseball broadcasts on a radio at work. Today, he’s the Spanish broadcaster of the St. Louis Cardinals. He brings the same radio to Busch, to remind himself where he came from. I wrote about him:
Cardinals announce that on Opening Day there will be a Ceremonial First Pitch by Cardinals Hall of Fame 3B Scott Rolen to current Cardinals 3B Nolan Arenado.
What a story. With Vladimir Tarasenko’s team up 3-2 in the Stanley Cup Final, his wife gave birth Friday to a baby boy.
Game 6 is Sunday in St. Louis.

This is pretty surreal - Adam Wainwright has begun singing for his postgame country concert here at Busch Stadium. Thousands of
#STLCards
fans stayed for the show. Waino said the previous biggest crowd he ever played for was … 800 people.
Here he is, 18-year-old Miguel Pérez, who scored his first MLS goal tonight, two days after graduating from STL’s Pattonville High.
St. Louis City SC won, 3-1.
“I love this city,” Wainwright said to the crowd after his 200th win. “I love being a St. Louis Cardinal. And I love that I got to play my whole career here.”
An impromptu, emotional moment here at the Busch Stadium press box. Some fans under the press box began cheering for Rick Hummel, the

⚾️ writer retiring after 51 years at the newspaper.
Laila Anderson’s mom texted this photo of them on the plane today - they’re heading to Boston for Game 7.
And here’s a link to our
@stltoday
story, with the video and quotes about Laila from Jordan Binnington and Pat Maroon:

This team.
Eight wins in a row. Pujols homering constantly. Goldy chasing Triple Crown. Nolan making ridiculous plays with glove (and barehand). Montgomery ace-like. Waino ace-like. Mikolas ace-like. Nooooooot.

In the Rams’ 5th year in STL, they hosted the NFC Title Game, and it was an epic event for a city that had completely embraced this new team.
In the Rams’ 6th year in LA, they’re going to host the NFC Title Game for a bunch of 49ers fans.
This place is packed. Thousands waiting to get into the Dome for the first Battlehawks home game. Team expects 38,000 fans for this XFL game. St. Louis is a baseball town, yes, but St. Louis is also a SPORTS town.
Interesting moment on Cardinals postgame show. Jordan Montgomery is named “player of the game” after his 5 innings pitched, 2 runs.
Al Hrabosky pauses and says: “I’m sorry, you can’t say a guy has a good outing when he goes five innings.”
Along with his son, Deuce, and his GM, Danny Ainge, St. Louis native Jayson Tatum signs his five-year, $195-million contract with the Celtics... while wearing a Cardinals hat.
Laila.
The Blues fan touched St. Louis (and the
#STLBlues
players) in 2019 with her perseverance and authenticity during her physical hell.
The team won the Cup.
5 years later, Laila is 15 and healthy, playing hockey and … just won a Cup!
Story:
Jayson Tatum (left) and Matthew Tkachuk (right) were classmates at Chaminade in STL a decade ago. Now they’re both in the Eastern Conference Finals of their sport. Here’s Tatum’s high school video which includes the screenshot:
Laila’s mother texted me this photo to share. It’s amazing and beautiful how much love Colton Parayko and this whole city has for this 11-year-old fighter.
True story. Matt Carpenter just told us in the clubhouse that after X-Rays were negative on his hand, he proved to the
#STLCards
trainer that his hand was OK by ... opening a jar of salsa.
After interviewing St. Louis native
@beckysauerbrunn
, I decided to write my column as a letter to my daughter. And they ran it on the front of The St. Louis Post-Dispatch today. A special day:
I’m curious how many people actually follow the hashtag during the game. If you’re following

and see this, can you favorite this tweet? Thanks!
A St. Louis Cardinals jersey promoting respect and love for the LGBTQ+ community.
Maybe it’ll make some people think - “If the Cardinals can be kind and accept that community, maybe I should, too.”
As

begins, we are excited to celebrate our annual Pride Day at Busch Stadium on June 9.

Prediction:
Based on all the emails, comments and insults I’ve received, Nolan Arenado and Paul Goldschmidt will get standing ovations in their first at-bats back in St. Louis.
Stan Musial’s grandson sent me this today. It seems that Bryce Harper knows his history. Before Musial passed away in 2013, Harper gave Stan The Man this autographed jersey: “To Mr. Musial: I’ve always looked up to you! You raked!”

In January and early February of the year 2020, the President of the United States was impeached. This was only the third time in the history of the country that it had ever happened. By July of 2020, the impeachment was like the 73rd-biggest news story of the year.
1/2 Wow, 38,868 people attended tonight’s Battlehawks XFL game in St. Louis (sellable seats sellout).
And 22,000-plus (announced sellout) attended tonight’s MLS game in St. Louis.
All these years later I get mad when NFL fans (or mustached owners) say we couldn’t support NFL.
“I don’t want to win the wild card” says team’s second-best hitter who has made a decision to sit out two games in Toronto, game outcomes that could affect the Cards winning the division or the wild card.
