Actor: Avatar: The Last Airbender, Star Trek: Discovery, Altered Carbon, MITHC, iZombie et al. Governor-General award-winning playwright. Art, family, nature.
How it started, how it's going. One of the roles I'm currently shooting will be my 200th credit on IMDb. It all started 30 yrs ago, the 1st pic is from my 1st pro headshot session circa 1990. The 2nd pic is today. 38 doctors, 31 detectives, 8 Tanakas along the way. Been a ride!
So thrilled for the young cast of this epic show. What a responsibility to bring these beloved animated characters to life. From what I've seen they're handling it w joy & grace. Light-hearted pics courtesy of Gordon's dad, featuring the detailed costuming.

As someone who grew up watching the original Star Trek on 1 of 3 channels we had on tv back in the day, I can't tell you all how thrilled I am to be a part of this mission making contact for the 1st time w an alien species from beyond the galactic barrier. 🖖❤ & 😋
Actors get the glory but it took a village to transform me into Lord Sozin. Applying the beard was a nearly 3-hour process, with much of it hand-laid a few strands at a time. And check out the details on Sozin's magnificent boots, details which might never be featured on -screen!
Not CGI or set lighting. Just a remarkable beam of sunlight pouring through a backstage window during my last week on Star Trek: Discovery IV. This image really captures my time on the show. Don't know what the future holds but wherever my journey leads I will boldly go! 🖖❤

As someone who experienced the love and optimism on set early in Season 1, this is heartbreaking to learn. Thank you for bringing to light the pressures Asian actors and writers face, even when at our most successful.
Fun fact:
#AlteredCarbon
was my 6th time playing a guy named Tanaka. 4 of note: Capt Tanaka, Det Tanaka
#romeosection
, Mr Tanaka
#breakerhigh
(yes that's teen Ryan Gosling) & Peter Tanaka
#XFiles
Note to screenwriters: I hereby declare a moratorium on Japanese guys named Tanaka!
PDA alert. Celebrating my wife's birthday. In her belief system (& who am I to question) a woman's birthday is more appropriately a 'birthday week'. Believe me it's win-win since I get to celebrate w her. Lots of talented & beautiful women in the world--I'm blessed she's mine! 💞
Highly recommend two Japanese films currently streaming on Netflix, both of which advance the cause of diversity & representation: Ainu Mosir, a frank portrait of the struggle for identity among the Indigenous Ainu of my native Hokkaido, and... 1/2
A week after I was wrapped on
#AlteredCarbon
i got called in for this cyber-scan: had to stand in this cage & get scanned doing a bunch of basic facial expressions & postures. To this day i don't know why. Unless...Psychasec is real & they're gonna make a Tanaka sleeve!
My son is EIGHTEEN today! Our shining prince, the sky is the limit for him. If my wife and I do nothing else, we'll know we raised this exceptional young man. So proud! (Last pic is mom eavesdropping on him talking to a univ recruiter!)
37 Seconds, an astonishingly frank story about an aspiring manga artist with cerebral palsy and her attempts to defy expectations and explore her sexuality. Both these films prove not only that diversity & representation matter, but that it is so rewarding & enriching for us all.
14 yrs ago yesterday, my wife honored my heritage by marrying me in a traditional Shinto ceremony in Japan. Last night we honored her heritage on National Indigenous Peoples' Day w a historic Welcome Post blessing she organized for our city of Port Moody. Proud of our diversity!

There IS more to it. But big picture, a) it wouldn't even occur to BIPOC people that they could do anything resembling the siege of the Capitol & b) the current gov. response to the siege is inconceivable if the insurgents were predominantly non-white.
Double-vaxxed! Followed up AZ w Pfizer. Grateful to have that choice. I remember last spring when optimistic timelines for Covid vaccines were 12 -18 months. Here we are just a little more than a year later. Thank you, Science! ✌✌
59 yrs ago on a dirt street in Sapporo, my mom went into labor dragging a sack of coal into the house for the "lumpen stove." Tonight I celebrate my 1st birthday in Hokkaido since I was 4 & my 1st birthday w my parents since age 14! How the world & our family destiny has changed!
I'm a journeyman actor, a gypsy, a ronin, but damn what a sweet run of gigs I've had the past month. With Gary Oldman on the film Dreamland, Katrina Law on the pilot Alive and Jessica Biel on the new series Limetown. Dream jobs. Living the life.
I'm fortunate to have an Asian name that is a homophone for an English word w a positive meaning. Many Asian names are not & are one of the most common ways Asian people are mocked & Othered. Proud to be part of the initiative to normalize Asian names!
@Elena121970
I don't know you at all, but your tweet reached me, right? The darkest, longest night just passed. I'm sorry about what you're going through right now, but it's gonna get better!✌❤
Periodically when I'm privileged to be a part of some high-profile shows as I am now w Star Trek: Discovery IV & Upload II, I work w the good ladies at
@TheMPRfirm
to up my profile & reach new audiences. These are some fav shots from a shoot they organized w

My 16-yr-old son got his Learner's licence so I've been taking him out driving around our neighborhood. He's doing fine. But Holy Toledo is my right foot ever getting a workout hitting the non-existent phantom brake on the passenger side. I might have given myself a shin splint!
1st run since recovering from Covid. Had some worries: would I run out of air, run out of gas, cramp up, get dizzy, pass out, drop dead? I did alright. At one point I think a bear was chasing me but as you can see I got away!
Happy birthday to my dad, 88 today! Clockwise from Top L: @ home w my mom who's 90! In his waiter uniform @ the seniors home cafe where he volunteers, w me @ my sister's wedding in 1995 when he was the age I am now, & Niagara Falls in '95 w my mom. So youthful! Bodes well for me!
When you're no spring chicken and you have to spend as much time as I do writing, you need innovative ways of keeping the spine and hips flexible. This has been working for me. Note massage gun on the desk in the b.g.
If anyone needs an encouraging word to keep wearing your mask in public I'm w you 100%. I'll keep wearing my mask to protect & support the invisibly vulnerable among us: our elders & their caregivers, immuno-compromised friends, front-line workers, young kids & their parents.✌❤
Happy New Year! The Japanese tradition is to eat toshikoshi soba, "year-end" soba, the ends of the noodle representing the year just past and the year to come. Friends, I hope everything you give of yourself to the world returns to you many times over in 2023!
Past 5 mo. have been one of the most intensely creative periods of my life. Dec - Mar: full immersion in the Vancouver - Calgary premieres of "Forgiveness." Spent Apr completing 1st draft of my latest play, a commission for Banff Centre & Stratford Festival. It is done!!! 🎉🥂
Happy birthday to my goddess, Tasha Faye Evans, 50 years young today. Having a wonderful time celebrating in my homeland with family and friends old and new. What new adventures await, my love? Whatever happens, you enrich every moment with your love, wisdom and passion.
♥️💗💕💞
While I was in Japan, a show I had the immense pleasure of being on premiered & is now on its way to being one of the most watched shows on Netflix EVER. Congrats
@ShawnRyanTV
& The Night Agent team! Classmates from high school days in Tokyo are sending me screencaps!
Every girl's crazy 'bout a sharp dressed man!
Thrilled by the rave reviews for Apple's mini-series Pachinko which features "zainichi," Japan's Korean minority. I have a cameo in the pilot as Mr. Goto (Goro in the book), who will hopefully play more in a Season 2!
Check this out: my 12-year-old daughter was given an art assignment to mirror a photo of herself and I'm blown away. If I gush over her work at home she gets annoyed so here I am on Twitter bragging to you all!
My 90-year-old mother speculating on Japan's future as she washes dishes after dinner: "What was that movie... Something 'Green'? Where they grind people up for food? What a shocking movie that was! But so prophetic. That's our future. They should play that movie again!
Japanese-Haitian tennis superstar Osaka Naomi brought 7 masks to the US Open, one for each round, and each mask in memory of a Black victim of police violence. She advanced to the fourth round today. Pride. In the name of love.
My mother Nobuko celebrated a milestone birthday earlier this week--90 yrs old & still going strong!!! First pic is her on her birthday at home in Hokkaido w my dad (who is a year younger).
2nd pic is 59 yrs ago w me on Day 96. Blessed to have her genes, strength & resilience! ♥️
How it started , how it's going.
Happy birthday to this woman who is All Good Things to me. I crossed the desert, I climbed the mountain, she is my beautiful reward.
One of the highlights of working on Star Trek: Discovery was getting to work w
@chelahhorsdal
. It was through Hirai's relationship w her President Rillak that I was able to fully understand the matriarchy of the Discovery universe.
My ONE (BIG!) regret from my time on Star Trek Discovery, I wrapped & flew out the day before Stacey Abrams arrived. Huge fan of hers, still thrilled to be in the same episode w her!
Yes, that was Stacey Abrams with a cameo on Star Trek Discovery as president of United Earth. A proud Star Trek nerd, Abrams has appeared as a guest on fan shows and has talked extensively about how the show shaped her perspective.

Great to be back on set, my bread & butter. One perk of playing wealthy characters--the threads. This suit is as comfortable as a favorite t-shirt, and gotta love the sheen on the pink. The 2nd pic is just the hair/makeup shirt, and even that rocks!
At Costco just now in the Vancouver suburb of Burnaby and the overwhelming majority of shoppers--prob. 95%--and 100% of employees were masked. I'm glad to live in an area where this is still the case.
My son was born right around this time 15 yrs ago. Today my wife and I celebrate not only his birthday but our lives as parents and as a family. Through our children we became more than just ourselves.
My parents got hit w 5 ft of snow in Hokkaido earlier this week. Super proud of them as they dug themselves out despite my mom being 88 & my dad turning 87 next week. They made ice lanterns after because why not. That's some Hokkaido spirit right there. ドサンコ 頑張れ!
My 15-yr-old son asked me if he gave me 20 bucks could I order a bouquet for him to be delivered to his girlfriend's house. This is my impression of his reaction when I told him how much Valentine's Day costs.
My daughter y'all. Proud to be her dad & proud to be a dad she still wants to hang with. Even tho it seems to bother her slightly that I'm somewhat older than her friends dads. Daughter: Dad, you know...if you dyed your hair you could pass for...thirty-nine? Like not even forty!
16 years and an hour ago my son was born at home after a 36-hour labor. That was the last time he took anything slow. I guarantee you you'll be hearing about him in a few years. So grateful for this journey watching him grow. 💞
Behold! The flaming of the caramelized apples for my kids' crepes. Because service is my love language and if I'm serving you, I'm gonna put love in it and make it special for you. My kids aren't spoiled--that's just how I roll! Finished product and happy child below. ⬇️
Fire Lord Sozin eats lunch.
As it took the Wizards in Hair&MU nearly 3 hrs to get me ready, I had to be very careful.
Is this what the ZZ top guys go thru every freaking day!?!
Happy Asian Heritage Month!
My mom Nobuko Kanagawa is 89 today! Here she is w my dad who is a few months younger. It's been hard not seeing them during Covid, but my mom's positivity has helped. She always has a smile in her voice & laughter in her heart. A merry heart truly is the best medicine.
🎉🎂❤
On the road but terrified of traveling w more than carry-on. An important self-tape audition comes up. Improv, baby, in more ways than one: camera clamp on a Nespresso box sitting on an ironing board balanced on a foot stool & bedside shelf. The result: pro grade!
#actorslife
Totally confused just now when I popped in to the drug store for a quick $8 purchase.
Cashier: Are you under 55?
Me: Uh...? I'm older.
Cashier: Well then you get our 20% senior's discount today!
Me: 😶
I feel like she said I was old then took $1.60 off my bill as compensation.
En route to Narita. We all have the "Blade Runner" vision of modern Japan but outside the big centralized cities Japan has a lot of space and greenery--and solar panels!
The past year or so my daughter's been acting like she's too old to holding her dad's hand when we're out & about, but on our weekend vacay in TO she took my hand or arm every time we were out. It was wonderful! 💞
Japan's convenience store onigiri are easily among the best convenience foods in the world. The rice & fillings are excellent & they are wrapped w origami cunning to keep the nori crisp & dry until ready to eat. They're cheap, too, typically less than 150 yen. Great cheap snack!
Thanks for all the birthday greetings! My wife jokes I'm never home for my birthday & this year was no exception, but I am blessed w family, friends, health & about as much work as I can handle. Looking forward to another orbit of the sun--and many many more! ✌❤🤙

Big fan

& agree no evidence of permanent white settlement. But L'Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland, is from 1000 yrs ago & Norse sailors used it for about 20 yrs. Remains of a few structures there & hundreds of Norse artifacts. A UNESCO world heritage site.

after the 1st reading of the 1st draft of my play Forgiveness which premieres in Jan. 2nd photo is today, preparing for 1st reading of the 1st draft of my next play Urashima. Dreaming of where it might be 3 yrs from now.
I bought bananas when we already had bananas, so I convinced my daughter to try her hand at banana cream pie. She made two. That's watcha call good parenting & filial piety. Happy Pi Day!
There are two highly anticipated movies being released this week. One of them is about a controversial public figure and how they reflect the enduring cognitive dissonance between our stated values as a society and the reality of our myriad systemic hypocrisies.

Tis the season. 1st pic ever of the 4 of us semi-formal as "adults." And we didn't drag them, we were visitors at their banquet for their school football program. Yes, my son's collar is that way on purpose. Yes, my daughter is too cool for family photos. Still proud tho!
#family
My new profile banner. I know what the next 4 are that I want to write. There's also a pile of unproduced work: a musical/opera, a full-length play, an optioned feature-length comedy, a commissioned feature-length thriller. At my age that'll probably keep me busy til I'm dead!
Out taking campaign photos for my wife's city council run and our neighbor took this photo of us. Has quickly become one of our favorite photos of the two of us together!
When my son was 6 & blazing fast i offered him $100 if he could beat me by 13. But last Oct. when he was 11.5 I barely beat him, so i offered him double or nothing by age 12. We ran shirtless & barefoot yesterday on the beach. He ran for the money. I ran for so much more.
Beyond thrilled to share that auditions have officially been announced for my stage adaptation of Mark Sakamoto's award-winning WWII family memoir, "Forgiveneness." I've attached the audition notice. Please share with anyone you think is destined to join us on this epic journey!
Japanese history buffs and fans of my dulcet tones, check out the exciting new doc series Age of Samurai: Battle for Japan now on Netflix, narrated by yours truly. Maybe one day I can get into Peter Coyote/Morgan Freeman territory as a narrator! tonesttps://youtu.be/_RYcKCtbFpE
Pre-opening celebration w my wife at The Orchard in Calgary. "Forgiveness" opens in 1 hour to a packed house at
@TheatreCalgary
's Max Bell Theatre. Going to be an epic night!
A cheque from a show I'm on got sent to a house I lived at 13 yrs ago. Family who live there now tracked me down & DM'ed me: Do we have the right person, did u used to live here? I said not only that, my daughter was born there! Turns out their 3 kids were born their too! Crazy!
Covid Day 6. Fine during the day, fever returns at sundown. We'll see how it goes tonight. Fortunate to have this basement walkout w light & air to isolate in, where my office is anyway. This is where the plays get written, the self-tapes & Zooms happen & where Covid is beaten!
Have yet to test positive but seems likely I've finally contracted Covid. Luckily, very mild so far, aside from this low-grade fever all I have is a sandpapery chest. Covid isn't over--be careful out there!
Happy Mother's Day to the 2 greatest moms I know: my mother Nobuko and my wife Tasha. Here they are at Hokkaido Jingu in 2004 moments before Tasha and I were married. If there is any goodness in me it's because of these two women. Blessed to have them in my life. 💞💕
Absolutely brilliant Lunar New Year postcard! In Japan we use the kanji 子for "rat" & as you can see the artist has rendered the character to evoke the animal. Happy Year of the Rat. Wishing you All Good Things in 2020!
We're on a fam vacay at a cabin on Kemp Lake, about 10 min. northwest of Sooke, BC. I'm an early riser & a perk of getting up early is having the world to yourself for a couple hrs. I had this fog-enshrouded magic all to myself this morning and was at peace in the solitude.
