Hopefully, the book is about all these things! It's also about faerie circles and sentient libraries, universities behind hidden doors and nightclubs in underground bunkers, Oxford and Paris and Pendle Hill, secrets and sacrifices and impossible choices.

(This book was first pitched as "Brideshead Revisited meets Wicked," because both stories do that shift ahead so well. It isn't that now, but it's no coincidence that it does have a house belonging to a fading age, a magical government built on lies, and a flying broomstick.).

I wanted to write about the vivid, heady first years of university--and particularly, I wanted to move beyond those years, to jump ahead and revisit the characters as full-grown adults living in the aftermath.

I wanted to write about the strange, terrible period immediately before, during and after WWI, when so many found themselves in a broken world and determined to make a new one at cost.

I wanted this book to be about a lot of things. I wanted to write about intense scholarship and intense friendships, and the power of both to endanger or save the world.

This the story of Clover Hill, whose brother returns from WWI under a faerie curse, and who enters an elite magical university to save him. Once there, she befriends a group of aristocratic scholars, and uncovers a secret with terrible consequences.
