Train PhD students in software that is widely used in the corporate world. While I knew the general functions of MS Office programs, I have spent the past week learning about Excel and pivot tables, something that is widely used in most jobs.

For instructional design jobs sample teaching materials are a must. But nobody wants to see paper syllabi or Canvas pages. Train students in software that is actually used like Storyline or Articulate.

Possible solutions: for writer jobs portfolios are a must. I have a 218 page dissertation but no shorter writing samples that I can showcase. Have PhD students create different types of writing and help them start compiling an online portfolio early on in their studies.
