New paper out! :). While there is some great reporting about AI out there, we know that news coverage about this topic is often far from ideal. In this study, we explore the issues journalists face when writing about AI, the tools they use, and potential solutions

I plan to continue exploring AI and journalism topics, as Large Language Models increasingly mediate news consumption and synthetic media threaten the information landscape. I'm weirdly glad that I’ll be stressing about this for the next couple of years.

The article explores how Germany’s Green Party is shifting focus away from climate action in its election campaign, responding to political pressures and attacks from the far right while trying to appeal to a broader voter base.

My first story for @guardian is out!. We analyzed the donations of tech-related billionaires and millionaires to the US campaign. It was a lot of money from a sector that used to keep some distance from politics.

This raises important concerns about source concentration in news distribution, especially as online search is one of the main forms in which people access news today. Check out the preprint for details! .

There was also a slight leftward bias when selecting media outlets ---on top of a leftward bias in national media itself in the analyzed countries.

The findings also noted a recency bias, even in contexts that were not related to breaking news events. This behavior might incentivize publishers to scatter stories over multiple articles to always have something fresh for the algorithm to pick up.

The study also notes that these patterns might be hidden depending on how the investigation is conducted. This concentration pattern could only be seen over time and multiple queries, as a single results page might give a false impression of a balanced output with diverse sources.

This echoes previous findings (and relates to Google's algorithm privileging popular sources) and shows that they apply to different countries and scenarios.

We analyzed over 220,000 search results across Brazil, the UK, and the US, and found significant concentration among a small number of national news outlets.
