I'm going to answer a few questions I've seen before I mute this.
1. "White people practice Voudou!"
--> If they do, they were given special permission to do so. There are also more 'open' branches of Voodou, but it is a closed religion. 🧵
It’s not a ‘complex queer romance,’ it’s cohesive rape retconned to make you feel bad for the upper-class white prince that trapped the lower class brown man into a sex deal.
bitches will be like “we want complex queer romances in media” and then write essays about how this ship is so toxic and evil helluva boss should be cancelled for the good of mankind. like I don’t think you do.
#stolitz
To everyone who ever said that Vivzie cares about SA/R victims, even after the mess that was episode four, and after fetishizing AD & Valentino’s relationship in the show…
I’m terribly sorry to any victims who felt seen by Angel Dust.
Vivzie is an internalized misogynist who has a distain for WLW. Very few people will say it outright, most will try and deny it, but it’s been true for years.
Also I must know, where is the female sexuality in this show? Nifty has been shown as being sexual but she's straight. All the male characters are almost exclusively sexual to depict feelings. But where is the WLW sexual compatibility between Charlie and Vaggie? Why so sexless?
Eye twitches.
Having characters of different races does not cancel out the racism in the series. I could write essays on how almost every brown character in Helluva Boss/Hazbin Hotel is violent or angry, or the lack of black features in these characters.
How are you gonna accuse me of racism when you yourself admitted that ‘Fritz the Cat’ isn’t racist?
I’m a black. I’ll use Bertha any damn way I please.
“Hazbin Hotel/Helluva Boss has generated real, actual rape apologists by desensitizing its audience to rape/rapists” is not a statement I thought I would ever say unironically.
This is actually a really interesting comparison for all the wrong reasons.
We have Pearl, who Rose desperately tried to separate romantically from because she knew about their power imbalance. She wanted Pearl to become her own person, without Rose. (cont.)
Okay, but people aren't complaining about the design? They're complaining because Adam, Eve, Lillith, Saint Peter, etc, aren't white. They're brown. I promise most people would've praised her for making them as such.
Make him a white man, ppl complain that he’s white. Make him a black man instead, ppl complain that they made a black man a misogynistic villain. Y’all genuinely just want to be angry about ANYTHING lol. His design would have been ridiculed no matter what skin color he had
“B-but all the characters are violent/angry!”
It’s how they’re presented/written that’s important. There’s a concerning pattern that can’t just be written off by going ‘they’re supposed to be bad/evil!’ 🧵
Eye twitches.

This last week on Twitter has shown me how deeply anti-blackness runs in art circles.
Eurocentricism is so deeply rooted in art that drawing ethnic features somehow become ‘caricatures’, and redesigns of these ‘caricatures’ makes them thin, small nose, and small lips.
Y'all, the issue here isn't Alastor being a stripper, it's his 'stripper' name being 'Jambalaya.'
It's a dish central to African-Creole culture (and Louisiana culture in general).
It would be like naming a Jewish stripper 'Challah.' It's insensitive.
@ind1estar
Voodou symbols; Voodou is a closed religion that can only be practiced by black folks/people of black descent, and white people are typically barred from learning it unless they're given permission from a Mambo/Oungan.
Oh, so y’all don’t care about our voices. Got it.
Stop using veves— all of these are either parts of veves or a complete symbol.
Voudou is not for your use.
It's been awhile, but I recognize Kalfu's veve (distantly), Marasa's veve (clearly), and Simbi veve (distantly). So no, these aren't just random symbols.
One last thing before I go to bed. I cannot believe I have to explain my biology and beliefs just to be respected on this g-dforsaken app, but here we go…
Y’all will say she can draw fat characters, and then she makes them all the exact same, offensive stereotype. You want her to be good at character design so bad you’ll accept fatphobic and antisemetic stereotypes. BFFR.
Someone sent this to me.
There is a reason why the Sapphire and Angry Latina exist and why they're bad; it's rooted in racism. There are other factors that add to those respective stereotypes (Millie being 'dominate' over her white husband, Vaggie's anger being belittled).
Eye twitches.

So Rosie is confirmed Jewish, being a Jewish Mother stereotype and a blood libel because she’s a cannibal, and apparently she has ‘zero of the gross stereotypes aside from having a yankee accent.’
Okay, history lesson time! 🧵
1. The show is 16+.
2. Many SA victims have also talked about their dislike of Angel Dust and how he’s portrayed— detailed SA scenes have always, /always/ looked down upon by victims, because it gets nothing done.
#HazbinHotel
Now I see people screaming that HH is bad because of a scene with Angel and Val.
This show is 18+ for crying out loud.
They are also not listening to fans, who have this awful experience with SA.
1 (cont). You cannot just jump into it willy-nilly, it's something someone has to let you into. Trying to practice by yourself can lead to disastrous consequences, especially if you're white.
2. "Why use 'Voudou/Voodou/Voudoo' and not 'Voodoo?'
Most people find 'Voodoo' to be--
A very, very long thread of the weird behavior of Norry, aka @/NorryNator. Trigger warning for CSA, Pedophilia, Child Abuse, Rape/SA, Abuse, and everything else related to those things.
This has been a long-time coming, although it's not necessarily a call-out post.
CW/TW, Sexual Harassment.
What do you mean the person who sexually harassed a child and got off to animating rape scenes (not CNC) altered their appearance to look more like Angel Dust, changed their name to Tony, and is now doing Sex work?
Hi! I’m Jewish.
Mimzy is a textbook Jewish American Princess, along with having several other negative stereotypes associated with the Jewish people.
That’s not even mentioning Rosie, who’s literally a blood libel.
Non-black folks constantly talking over me and my experiences with Voodou, let me just say:
It’s not for you. Many other cultures have closed practices; it’s not ‘racist’ for them to exist.
Next person to tell me Angel's SA was handled well is getting shown this scene.
We're just a fetish to her. Something to gawk and laugh at when it's convenient, or to get off to when she wants.
I shouldn't be this upset. I should've expected this.
2 (cont). Outdated and offensive. Some Voodou practitioners have reclaimed the term, but if you're not familiar with it, I wouldn't use 'Voodoo' at all. Here's a few articles you can read about this, and why most people don't like this term (linked in the next post):
This is not the full scene, either, and it gets worse. I’m hoping my post can negate most of the damage this scene may cause, because unless something has changed, there is no trigger warning at the beginning of the episode.
s/a , rape ment
-
-
the way it's presented not even subtly and like a fetish is so gross sorry. viv has made fun of s/a and rape b4 so this leaves a bad taste in my mouth when it tries to come off as "victim representation"
5. "You just hate Vivziepop/Why not say something earlier?!"
I did, and so did many others. We kindly requested that she not use Voudou for Alastor, because regardless of the race of the character, she does not have permission to use it.
None of it is handled with tact. If you are sensitive to this kind of thing, I’d recommend you skip the entirety of the ‘Poison’ scene, and a minute or so after.
She’s a mix of Vivziepop’s writing of women, which is:
Mother
Badass Protector
Crazy Bitch
There is no female character in HH/HB that isn’t one of these three things (or a mix of).
"there are no good female characters in hazbin"
"carmilla is a strong powerful female character!!"
and thats all she has. she shows up twice and her only thing is protecting her family, weapon dealing, and being strong/powerful. WHERE IS THE CHARACTER??? 😭
Racial Coding can be negative, but it is not exclusively negative. An example of racial coding could be an anthropomorphic character with dreads.
Racial Coding has never been 'pigeonholing non-white... characters into certain personality traits.'
4. "What about Christianity?!"
Christianity is not a closed religion, and Western Christianity is completely different from it's origins. You are allowed to be critical of any religion, but do not use something that's private and restricted to us for a reason.
3. "Oh, so you're the ruler of Voudou?"
No. These are my experiences, and some of them aren't going to be accurate to other branches of Voudou. Please listen to other rootworkers, because I haven't actively practiced in years.
(Gives Mimzy antisemitic stereotypes, makes her a textbook Jewish American Princess)
“But she’s not a Jewish character! She’s based off a chicken!”
Flappers were popularized by and were famously Jewish. And what’s your excuse for Rosie?
Angel Dust is bad representation because he’s told that he’s a ‘loser’ for being in the situation he’s in, and is encouraged to continue to use his unhealthy coping mechanisms, and we’re meant to cheer for him and agree with that choice.
They found me.
Calling me a racist/misogynistic/homophobic for pointing out concerning patterns in a show I enjoy is not a 'gotcha.' I did not expect this to blow up at all.
I have angry black characters-- I am an Angry Black Person. I can reclaim that: Vivziepop cannot.
Eye twitches.
Having characters of different races does not cancel out the racism in the series. I could write essays on how almost every brown character in Helluva Boss/Hazbin Hotel is violent or angry, or the lack of black features in these characters.
Hi everyone! Spindlehorse is expanding our Animation Team!
Applications are now open
For further details/ how to apply please refer to the following doc.
Fritz the Cat is one of my favorite films, and was revolutionary when it came to Adult animation and black animation. Bakshi hired (mainly) black and jewish animators, which was unconventional at the time.
Bakshi has a lot of good films surrounding race relations in—
How are you gonna accuse me of racism when you yourself admitted that ‘Fritz the Cat’ isn’t racist?
I’m a black. I’ll use Bertha any damn way I please.
There is something particularly sick and twisted about releasing a song remix with a character’s rapist abuser during Sexual Assault Awareness month, sparking a conversation where in defending said remix, fans defend rapists and the act of rape.
Not once does Rose talk down to or demean Pearl; she treats her as an equal, both physically and emotionally. She makes /sure/ she doesn't overstep any of her boundaries, but at the same time pushes her to have her own autonomy. She respects her as a person and individual.
This is literally a slippery slope argument. There’s porn of real-life children and people on AO3, god-awful racism, but removing that means you’re pro-censorship? Somehow?
i cant hold in anymore, yall gotta stop pretending all types of censorship is equal. Theres a difference between blocking lgbtq content and removing the fucking “rape kink” fics and the shota/lolicon tags.
You will never be able to practice Voodou, and demeaning me and my experiences with Voodou is awful behavior.
If you’re going to be disrespectful/offensive under my posts, best believe I’m going to drag you through the mud for everyone to see.
That isn't to say that black people cannot take these roles! But if you're a non-black/brown writer, you need to ask yourself why most of your brown/black characters are bad/evil (Hazbin Hotel, mostly).
This is a double-edged sword; because Rose was so crucial to Pearl's development, Pearl is utterly attached to her. Instead of becoming her own person, her entire persona is based around and on Rose and how she makes her feel (something that Rose knows and is uncomfortable with).
'It's Over, Isn't It?' is a representation of Pearl's feelings and her finally accepting that Rose is gone; it's an important episode (and step) to her /finally/ becoming her own person.
In contrast, we have Stolas.
I feel like we keep having this conversation over and over.
Stella did not want to have sex with him. Stolas did not want to have sex with her. They needed to produce an heir, and they never did anything again because neither of them wanted each other.
It’s not rocket science.
I love how the fandom is serious about SA when it comes to Stella/Val, but when we say Stolas sexually harasses Blitz and Angel sexually harasses Husk, they get their pitchforks out and cry like babies. Like y’all only care about SA/abuse when it’s a character you hate, admit it.
@CrazyNightMare2
@ind1estar
It’s one thing to study them, another to use it as ‘evil/dark magic.’
Those symbols have power, and she’s using them as aesthetics.
First off, Hoodoo and Voodoo are two completely different things. They can't be used interchangeably.
Our culture and practices are not for you to add 'ooo spooky flare!' to your character. And the word you're looking for is 'Creole.'
I'm not looking forward to Alastor.
