Lack of meaning is directly correlated to the degree of availability and interchangeability of a work of art. Meaning is a direct result of a work of art being within itself and an authentic expression of truth within it.

The worst of contemporary culture is downstream of a hollow form of artistic production that is unable to possess itself. The output of such a logic is perpetually meaningless because of its permanent availability, forever outside of any essential truth or defining qualities.

True art envelops man within a real and living coming to presence of authenticity. In the absence of such a quality we can only encounter the work of art as a purely aesthetic object in perpetual distance from life and meaning, leaving us always unfulfilled.

Bad art is stuck in its “thingliness,” only ever an aesthetic object and unable to reconnect with its more essential character as “art.” Frozen in such a quality it is always available, part of the standing-reserve, and without any real essence or meaning.

Art increasingly takes on the quality of endless speculation of a universal utility and series of interchangeable objects. Vitality and meaning are replaced with a sterile and distant gaze, with actual existence largely impossible in the face of crystalized efficiency.

What this means is that nothing ever actually presents itself to us within much of modern culture - because to do so would be to “mean something,” which the work of art can no longer do if it is to remain perpetually available under technology’s logic.

Contemporary culture’s vacuity is directly owed to its reproducible and perpetually available quality, intrinsically creating empty cultural output without self-possession. Agamben’s Heideggerian critique of culture is correct - being is no longer at work within art.

Mythology isn’t just a system of cultural customs but a grounding of our epistemology within the revealing of history. Myth is an enveloping of ourselves within the unfolding of historicity, connecting future, past, and present. A conduit for the invigoration of life.
