Solutions that integrate blue (lakes & wetlands), green (parks and open spaces) & grey infrastructure have the potential to build more flood-resilient cities. If done right, cities can be planned to ‘make room for the rain’. One name for this approach is 'sponge cities'. 3/6

The crux of the sponge cities concept is simple - absorb, store and reuse rainwater using permeable surfaces such as green roofs and rain gardens, ponds and lakes. This reduces flooding and can replenish groundwater. 4/6

Most cities focus on grey infrastructure – human-constructed solutions like bigger pipelines & treatment plants – to try and drain as much of the flood water as quickly as possible. But these approaches fall short as extreme weather events get more intense & unpredictable 2/6
