Do you know the mitigation hierarchy? It's a way of prioritizing actions to limit biodiversity impacts, and also applies in the context of carbon emissions. #mitigationhierarchy #climate

2/2 ie the FIRST step of the #mitigationhierarchy is to avoid damage, then minimise - we should not focus straight onto remediation & offsetting. Bob Watson has it right:

Using a #mitigationhierarchy approach can help, there's examples at https://t.co/dwqYLUaZaf and https://t.co/znV1fMUO1T

A real theme of @LauraSonter’s session at #IAIA2019 is how much, relatively, avoidance vs offsets are used when mitigating #biodiversity impacts of development. Super interesting. See e.g. from @MarcoGtez’ talk, mentions of different #MitigationHierarchy stages in Australian SEAs

9/12 Add #Mitigationhierarchy for compensating impacts to #ConservationHierarchy for planning #conservation actions and get the #MitigationandConservationHierarchy; an integrated, scalable way to organise efforts to restore nature, accounting for both -ve & +ve actions

6/12 Yes! The framework helped us fill knowledge gaps & link actions with #biodiversity goals. Combining ecological risk assessment, #MSE and #mitigationhierarchy with stakeholder consultation we found high risk of #turtle #bycatch but scope for +ve social & ecological outcomes.

@dhh One reason why the #MitigationHierarchy is critical - environmental impacts must first be avoided wherever possible (e.g. don't fly) and then minimised (e.g. take a shorter route) BEFORE indulging in offsets. The "wherever possible" brings morals back into decision making.

One of the new principles in the National Environment Act 2019 is Section 115, which focuses on the #mitigationhierarchy, biodiversity, or other offset and compensation mechanisms. The COMBO+ aims to mitigate the damaging biodiversity and social impacts of #development projects.

In addition to #MitigationHierarchy, we should consider a more proactive approach through a #ConservationHeirachy. A framework that can unify public, private & third sectors & be applied across multiple scales, local to global, or supply chain to regional, says @samuelpsinclair

2/12 We had an idea! The #mitigationhierarchy is used to ensure development causes #NoNetLoss of #biodiversity. First Avoid impacts, Minimise, #Restore nature, then #offset unavoidable residual impacts https://t.co/pwKldB5iEw

How early is too early for social impact assessment? Great session at #IAIA2019 by @RichardBoele and others on the last day. It’s opening a can of worms but ideally, try avoid social impacts before they even arise - links to the #MitigationHierarchy I think!
