Concrete petrography rarely encounters organic matter, and with good reason, as it should have been washed out. Its presence in concrete is problematic, being water sensitive, prone to shrinkage and associated microcracking. 👇is an unfortunate if excellent example.

Here’s some cow hair reinforcement in a 19th century lime plaster for #ThinSectionThursday. The samples are impregnated with a blue resin under vacuum before sectioning; this makes it easier to look at features like porosity and microcracking in the mortar. 🖤
