What ecological surveying looks like when itโ€™s 30 degrees: crawling inside a hedge to take a break because itโ€™s the only way to get out of the sun. Now I viscerally understand how important farmland hedgerows are for wildlife - itโ€™s a real lifeline ๐ŸฆŒ๐Ÿ๐Ÿชบ

The Common Buckthorn, which was once used as an ornamental plant and for hedgerows, is one of Ontario's most aggressive and unwanted invasive species. This small tree poses a significant threat to ecosystems by outcompeting and shading out native plants, degrading wildlife

Those fabulous shapes and textures (and then some!) can be found outside the cultivated garden, simply by looking down at the autumnal woodland floor, or at the foot of an old hedgerow. The remnants of summer climbers wind in, out and around the skeletal leaves, like tiny

Another day at the green oasis - slowed down to half speed for a better appreciation of the wild pond & those who sail in her. Field Maple attracts Greenfinches. They are easy to grow & will proliferate in the local hedgerows, as their seeds spread. The seeds & buds eaten all yr.

What a year for hedgerow berries. Four year old hedge proving itโ€™s worth for nature this year. Absolutely laden with haws and sloes. A real highlight of our time here. Planting hedges and watching them explode with life. Funded by you. Thank you. (Through CS Mid Tier)
