A3: Student engagement is critical to learning in classroom, and the same can be said for community service projects. If it’s a problem they are passionate about solving or making better, they’ll be even more committed to seeing it through, be invested in its success. #EBEDchat

So true! It’s hard to help the students “see” what life is like outside the walls of our schools and our town. #EBedchat

A2: First, I think it starts with awareness. In 2nd grade, I don't think students are fully aware of struggles that other community members might be facing. After awareness, then comes a plan! #ebedchat

A5: Civil Rights Unit saw many opportunities to explore how change & tolerance is fought for, takes longer than it should, & how setbacks can create opportunities for unity or division. We even discussed disagreement w/in movements about how to proceed (MLK & Malcom X) #ebedchat

A6: In my role as coach, I feel it’s vital to encourage teachers to keep an open mind & not be afraid to ask questions or ask for help in creating lessons that tackle inclusion, etc. We have to model this as leaders & respect where people are at to help ensure progress. #ebedchat

A5. My second graders write in gratitude journals on a regular basis so they can see the good even when things are tough! We work in teams during virtually all of our learning and have regular water breaks. Our school provides healthy fruit or veggie snacks 3x a week. #EBEdchat

A2: Thanks to @jkroll205 and her designing amazing community service projects for all students at @CentralSchoolEB, I think this alone will inspire students to do maybe some more community service projects. #EBedchat

So I'm facilitating this catch-all session at #EBEdchat in Rm 1421 at 11:50 called "Why We Teach: A Chat about Citizenship and Other Things." No agenda, no pressure, just a thoughtful and friendly talk for teachers and parents. Try it out!

A4: Roadblocks? TIME! But seriously, I (we?) need to shift from blaming time as an excuse. We’re teaching students to be successful individuals in our world who are kind, compassionate humans. Adding a community service project only enhances that goal. #EBedchat

A3: I tried to blend in & for the most part I did but I always felt like an outsider b/c my father was sick with some sort of cancer (4 to be exact) at some point up to junior year in HS. Fast forward now, I can relate to feeling isolated, preoccupied, or trauma. #EBedchat

My favorite thing to do on the first day is read to the kids. So simple but I love it! Builds a love of reading from the start, a little pre assessment front talking about the book, and you can read with silly expressions! #EBedchat

I always advise parents to pick out a biography of someone aligned to their child’s interests. Read it with them and have conversations about it. I’ve had some call me back in September to say how it was a great learning and bonding experience. #EBedchat

Remember with the #FirstDayOfSchool approaching that good classroom management is focusing on meaningful relationships and not about mandatory rules. Show them that you care! #teachbetter #SEL #ebedchat #ebempower #tlap #iteachmath @EBCJHS

When we read Number the Stars in 4th grade, the students had a hard time understanding what the kids went through during WWII. Reading and experiencing the book helped though. So maybe we can add read alouds to help students understand the struggles some people have. #ebedchat

A2: I think it’s important that students realize that not everyone has the same life experience and some people need some extra support. Also, that community service doesn’t always have to involve spending money or big organizations. #EBEdchat
