Today, we looked at corpus-based approaches in dialectometry. I gave my students a variety of texts and asked them to come up with ways to compare dialects, followed by going through existing ways in doing corpus dialectometry, including works from @JWGrieve and my own.

Just gave a presentation online at the 29th International Conference on Yue Dialects. I talked about using computational methods to blend dialectometry and sociolinguistics in order to study Yue dialect changes in real- and apparent-time (3 generations).

We have finally started the second half of the dialectology workshop series - Computational dialectology/ dialectometry! We looked at why we want to use computational approaches to start with, then we explored different data types and then we moved on to distance calculations.

In today's dialectometry workshop, we looked at how to classify dialects using cluster analysis and multidimensional scaling. After introducing these methods, I did a demo using a dialectometric app I wrote, on @j_prokic's Bulgarian data.

In order to prepare for my PhD defence and for my upcoming workshop series ( https://t.co/G1iHBt0tBC, please spread the words), I have written an app which incorporates the scripts I used for my analyses and some additional functions. It's very convenient, ngl! #LeidenDialectology

My supervisor (@j_prokic) and I have been using multiple sequence alignment in dialectometry to investigate phonetic variation. Today, I read a paper by Atwood (1955), and it was a pleasant surprise to see that a very similar technique was already used.

Dialectometry: Every individual's speech is variable β and when we look beyond the individual, we see variation across space, time, style, and social structure β among other dimensions. And these variations are generally gradient rather than abrupt,β¦ https://t.co/nanWBWhgVl
