1st Day of Fishmas! The Rio Grande cichlid in Texas appears to have originally been limited to the lower reaches of the Rio Grande. However, a number of populations have been established in river drainages of Central Texas' Edwards Plateau. #12DaysofFishmas

What a cutie! This is a juvenile southern stargazer, a unique marine fish that can be found coastal waters, such as the Atlantic and the Gulf. Southern stargazers have an electric organ that can produce shocks up to 50 volts. #12DaysofFishmas

This unusual marine critter is a longnose batfish! It is found at depths between 95 and 755 feet. Longnose batfish are poor swimmers, and when they need to move, they do so by crawling/walking on the substrate, using their limb-like paired fins. #12DaysofFishmas

What a catch! Can you believe the Coastal Fisheries’ Aransas Bay team hasn’t caught this species since 1991?! This rarity is a Rock Sea Bass (Centropristis philadelphica) and is also the 2nd largest Rock Sea Bass we have ever recorded in an Aransas Bay trawl. #12DaysofFishmas

Have you ever seen a pufferfish this small?! This little guy is a least puffer, and believe it or not, adult least puffers usually only grow to less than six inches (100mm) in length. And if you look closely, you can see that this fish has a beak! #12DaysofFishmas

High summer water temperatures restrict walleye growth and survival in much of Texas. However, in the north Texas lakes, such as Lake Meredith, the species does very well. Six-to-eight-pound specimens are common at times! #12DaysofFishmas
