Bhopal states education is right, not a privilege but that system continues to make higher education a system that is based on white privilege. More white students continue on to doctoral study, despite high numbers of BME students who transition to Masters degree #ReExcellence

The emotional labour of supporting BME students is shouldered by BME academics but not acknowledged or accommodated by the University. By not looking into this or creating mentoring systems that mutually benefit and do not overwhelm staff, this could change. #ReExcellence

White women continue to be the main beneficiaries of affirmative action in the UK and US. The system allows white women to present themselves as diverse because the system does not threaten them, which ultimately means no real change is ever happening #ReExcellence

And despite these good grades, BME students (Bhopal notes issues with terms like BME) are still less likely to attend prestigious Russell Group unis, particular black students who have negative experiences due to curriculum, culture and treatment by staff #ReExcellence

The study found that many of the respondents careers โ€˜hit the buffersโ€™, and promotion was more difficult to achieve than for white colleagues. The snobbery of academia towards publications that are not Anglo centric saw individuals work being neglected & not valued #ReExcellence

Bhopal notes that โ€˜what about-isnโ€™t is used to hinder progress, intentionally or not. White women have been the major receipts of programmes like Athena Swan, not women of colour. Black students continue to receive lower degree marks, despite good A Level grades #ReExcellence

Bhopal argues we must link the race equality charter to funding: it must be used in the way the Athena Swan programme has. All institutions must be held accountable and must acknowledge and address institutional racism. A failure to acknowledge is a failure to act #ReExcellence
