@Pythonner So there are two ways we can use SL. One is to do the token-level loss with the Q & A pairs. Yes, that's expensive because writing the Answer can be a lot of work. The other case is to use the thumbs up/down you mentioned as a SL label (that's how they train the reward model)

@Pythonner The question then is whether we should use the reward model via RL or weakly supervised learning. Turns out that RL is probably the better choice here given the alignment objectives they measure.

@Pythonner I would say it's similarly expensive in terms of the annotation cost. The cost here is to get the labels to train the reward model in the first place. If you have these labels, you can use the reward model either for RL or SL (/weakly supervised learning)
