To mark the start of Southampton’s Global Jane Austen Conference here is a view of Lansdowne Castle, which would have been a very familiar sight to the Austens living in Castle Square in the early 19th century. @HistoricalSoton @SotonianHistory @SotonStories @SouthamptonHid1

Nat Mills & Bobbie, "The Rare Pair," were a British husband & wife comedy duo, who performed from the 1920s to the '50s. It's believed they popularised the song "There's a Hole in My Bucket" The correspondence is part of the West London Synagogue archives:

Last Friday we caught up with Louis Samuel Montagu and his travels through Japan - on this day in 1896 he was sheltering from the Kyoto rain by watching wrestling competitions, complete with ceremonial displays of wrestlers wearing gold brocade aprons #EYATravel @explorearchives.

Just the day for a walk on the pier! Renovated in the 1890s Southampton’s Royal Pier was then the largest in the south of England. Covering three and a half acres, it provided landing stages for ten steamers. @HistoricalSoton @SotonianHistory @SotonStories @SouthamptonHid1

#OnThisDay in 1815.To mark the anniversary of the battle we focus on one of the soldiers who fought on that day. We remember Lieutenant Colonel Samuel Ferrior by means of a letter to his brother. It was to be his last as he died at Waterloo.
