It is hard to describe the particular adrenaline rush of a hot deal for a company that no one realized they wanted 1 week ago.

There’s no secret whisper network VCs use to discover a deal is hot. Founders who have a hot hand just…act differently. They speak differently, respond to diligence questions differently, negotiate differently. Some founders do this naturally. Some founders learn it.

Some fundraises start and end quickly. Others take a long time to warm up and a long time to close. Most often, though, the warm up is slow and then everything happens in a bang.

Fundraising should be hard. When fundraising is too easy, it tricks founders into thinking building a business is easy. It should be hard to convince someone to give you millions of dollars that you’ll probably lose.

Beware anyone bragging about how many investor intros they can make. This is usually correlated with low quality introductions. Intros are good when they are targeted and rare.
