New edition of Charles III. The Inside Story out next week. Today’s extracts in the Mail: the problem with the Sussexes, Princess of Wales’s ‘spiritual’ awareness, funeral planning (good news) and Queen Camilla’s excellent idea for the Palace.

John Cruickshank VC of Coastal Command - last VC of WW2, last aviation VC, last Scottish VC - has died. In 1944, half dead with 72 wounds plus navigator killed, he pressed on to sink a U Boat. 5 hours from home but got his crew back. Another great baton passes (but to whom?).

Friday'S VJ Day 80th anniversary commemorations may have been overshadowed in budget and scale by those to mark D-Day and VE Day - but they were no less moving.

Stories to make your hair stand on end, flypasts, so much dignity amid so much horror and a 105-year old tearing up the script in front of King and country. An honour to be in the company of this lot. If you didn’t see it live, ⁦@BBCiPlayer⁩ awaits.

Hence the Mail’s ‘Stop the SAS Betrayal’ campaign. The Government claim the Legacy Act passed by Parliament to protect veterans is now ‘unlawful’. Leave it alone or replace it properly. But Labour’s plans for a flabby repeal is stirring unprecedented fury.

Today, the terrorists get ‘comfort letters’ and an amnesty from the Government yet their lawyers are pursuing the SAS through the courts (via millions of Legal Aid) for breaching their ‘human rights’. No wonder so many veterans are heading for Westminster this afternoon.

Revealed for the first time today: how the SAS saved the life of one of the IRA’s greatest cheerleaders - and her response when they did. Historic moment coming this afternoon as SAS veterans break cover to protest outside Parliament.

It was January 1981 on a snowy dawn at the end of a dead-end track in Co. Tyrone. Andrew was in charge of a military observation team who had only just disarmed the gunmen responsible.

I’ve written the words. What is so striking is how unspun it was (half drunk pints of beer sitting on top of the piano; sound conking out for Macca); and the crowd shots - dreadful haircuts but everyone is so thin.

40 years on, a brilliant new book by my old friend, the photographer Murray Sanders who covered Live Aid start to finish and has found all his old films in the attic. Foreword by Sir Brian May. Live Aid Relived.

Windsor awaits. Some reports are saying Macron is “first European leader” to pay state visit since Brexit (2016). Odd that Kings of Spain (2017) and Netherlands (2018) are not “leaders”. #Macron

Valiant parliamentary attempt by @aroberts_andrew to spare the Earl Marshal and Lord Great Chamberlain from Labour’s obsessive defenestration of the hereditaries. With some excellent quotes.

Welcome back, Mr President. A restored George Washington returns to his plinth in Trafalgar Square ahead of #Trump state visit and #USA250. He stands on imported Virginian soil (allegedly vowed never to set foot on UK) - but with new inscriptions honouring ‘enduring friendship’.
