Securing justice for victims of sexual offenses in the absence of much in the way of corroboration is noble. But it should not be done at the expense of the fundamentals of criminal justice. We imported a tool from Singapore which we don’t know how to use. Let’s learn it!.

This has led to a culture of carelessness among investigators who just throw together hearsay and a victim interview while the defense struggles against the tide of a predetermined outcome.

7. Failing to appreciate the dangers of conviction upon the testimony of a single witness and thereby failing to exercise diligence in scrutinizing evidence.

4. Giving the weight of testimony to police interviews when time and time again we see police officers interrupting interview sessions to lead witnesses and stop them from saying certain things. Also one documented case where prosecution advised “alignment” of statements.

3. Giving undue weight to hearsay testimony from close family members who can easily collude with the victim is wrong. It is very much against the findings of Singapore court justices in cases cited by former Justice Husnu Al Suood in Mukhtar v PG.

2. Placing the burden on defense to supply a motive to lie flies in the face of established principles across the world which deem this unfair and against the presumption of innocence. Inability to supply a motive does not mean an absence of it.

1. The research is clear. A child’s testimony is subject to several factors which can affect credibility. Maldivian courts have claimed against science that a child’s statement is innately convincing unless otherwise proven.

The current judicial practice when it comes to assessing evidence in child abuse cases needs to change. I remain a staunch advocate to fight against the abuse of children. But that war will not be won by tossing out centuries of legal principles out the window. Issues lie with;.

I even made an effort to point out the apparent discrimination to the servers but somehow they were not sensitized to how this would look. Being a former server myself I don’t want any server to be punished. But I hope management will educate them as to the optics of this.

However when a Caucasian family came and sat the servers rushed to bring them water although nothing else could be served. Perhaps our brown skin makes us impervious to dehydration. Very saddened and hope the managers will look into this.

Today due to a blackout I was forced to sit for half an hour at Gloria Jeans Ameen Avenue (a place I enjoy thoroughly). I and other brown people were sitting there for close to an hour and were not served anything due to electricity issues. I understand.

I think the second blackout warrants a detailed explanation to the public as to (1) the issue facing STELCO (2) the lasting solution required (3) the time taken to effect it and (4) the potential for additional blackouts. Silence breeds further discontent.

If the perpetrators suffer no consequences aren’t we empowering and encouraging future con artists to repeat the same? While innocent business owners have their accounts frozen indefinitely and are forced at gunpoint to compensate for crimes they didn’t commit.

What about the nexus between officers of the Maldives Police Service and the perpetrators of the GMCE pyramid scheme in the Maldives. Isn’t this the right time to create a Commission to ensure an impartial investigation and secure justice?.

As we embark on the ambitious venture of labeling and monitoring suspected gang members and seizing their assets, what news is there of the parties who duped and defrauded victims of millions and bought assets worth the same? Are their assets frozen? Any hope of detaining them?.
