Completely agree. The external can be beautiful, but it’s only part of the picture. When it becomes the measure of piety, we risk missing the essence. It’s the inner state, the adab, the sincerity that lasts. May we be guided toward inward sincerity, not just the symbols of it.

Not to undermine any of these things but it can be extended… beards, ‘modest’ clothing, carrying a misbaha or wearing a particular shawl, being known for attending certain gatherings or pictured with certain people etc. being enchanted by the external can create problems. .

my husband (whoever he may be) and i will visit Al-Andalus together, so he can recite Nizar Qabbani’s poetry about the Alhambra to me as we stroll through its gardens and palaces. non-negotiable. case closed.
