Here is a figure that summarizes our paper. We are able to produce a range of mono and di alcohols, carboxylic acids, and amines from waste plastics using a combination of pyrolysis and hydroformylation chemistry. The products we produce depend on the type of waste plastic.

I do not understand how any chemist can get confused by pyrolysis and incineration or combustion of plastics. One of my pet peeves is going to a conference and hearing people say that pyrolysis is the same as burning a plastic.
CUWP just released our latest fact sheet about plastic pyrolysis. Pyrolysis is receiving tremendous industrial interest as an approach to recycle waste plastics. We hope to clear up several misconceptions about the technology.

I am really lucky to work with some great modelers who can predict polymer-solvent solubility. I am very impressed with the accuracy of their predictions and we use this to approach enable the design of better processes for plastic recycling.
