Interesting use of “allies”. I think 🇬🇧 and 🇦🇺 have been customary allies since AUKUS, but new treaties are pushing it closer to formal status. The test, as always, will be whether an Australian minister can utter the A-word.
Allies in defence, but rivals in rugby 🇬🇧🇦🇺. From joint combat training to working side-by-side at sea, the Armed Forces of the UK and Australia team up to keep both our countries safe. As we face the infamous #Wallabies today, we wish good luck to our #Lions 🏉

Strengthening the defence industrial base sounds rather like AUKUS. If only Australia 🇦🇺 can be persuaded to increase its defence spending….
It was a privilege to host UK Deputy National Security Advisors Matt Collins and Nick Catsaras at the Pentagon yesterday. President Trump’s historic 5% defense spending pledge at the Hague Summit laid the foundation for a stronger and fairer NATO alliance. The UK’s focus on “NATO

“The apparent absence of an RN submarine participating with the 🇬🇧 CSG in Exercise Talisman Sabre… is unfortunate. However, the AUKUS Pillar II programme at least offers the opportunity to deliver benefits to all 3 nations much more rapidly than the lengthy SSN programme.” 🤔.

A long time between pings. But in some ways, the more extraordinary fact is the submarine and its crew survived the unscheduled seamount encounter. Testament to the survivability of the design.

“it's entirely appropriate that Anthony Albanese is meeting Xi again before he meets Trump for the first time. Xi is more important than Trump now.”. Odd that @abcnews finance editor can blatantly editorialise like this. We all have opinions, but this is surely off reservation.
America is pivoting back to fossil fuels and pulling out of renewable energy, while the rest of the world continues to do the opposite, Alan Kohler writes.

There is also the assumption that Australia cannot risk the loss of trade benefits with China, as if this is somehow an existential concern. Captured by China’s narrative of trade dependency. The anemic lighting adds to the unsettling effect.
Former FM Gareth Evans frames Taiwan's lack of diplomatic recognition as a moral condition of the Taiwanese, arguing that their lives are less worthy than those of Ukrainians or Kuwaitis.

Encouraging to see 🇬🇧 and 🇫🇷 jointly asserting their interests in Indo-Pacific security. “Issues” is weak in the Taiwan context, but overall a meaningful statement given US scepticism around a European role in the region:

UNCLOS is essential to the sovereign integrity and prosperity of many SE Asian countries, above all Indonesia and the Philippines, as archipelagic states. ASEAN should really have got behind the Arbitral Award, but unfortunately 🇨🇳’s might trumps maritime rights.

Is it just me, or is the government moving beyond stabilisation towards some kind of economic integration goal with 🇨🇳? Has a Russo-German pre-2022 feel. Except that 🇦🇺 recently experienced economic coercion from Beijing, and yet chooses to forget that inconvenient memory.
@AlboMP During the Prime Minister’s visit he will attend the Australia-China CEO Roundtable, a platform for Australian and Chinese business leaders to strengthen trade and investment between our two countries. 🇦🇺🇨🇳.
