A durational VR event unfurling over 24 hours, Gondwana is a constantly-evolving virtual ecosystem chronicling the possible futures of the Daintree Rainforest

Last Saturday, Gondwana wrapped up at @acmi for @MIFFofficial. Our biggest showing yet: 48 hours, 4 co-present VR immersants, >500 visitors, real-time lighting design and three huge projections. Together the audience protected 25% of the forest from the impacts of climate change!

Finally, the pièce de resistance: inside Gondwana’s virtual Daintree are 72 virtual cameras, which feed out to a livestream or a projection, completely copresent with all VR and 2D users. It’s a beautiful, cinematic immersion in the rainforest with no headset required

If you know Tilt you know it’s v heavy to work with. Achieving density in Gondwana’s huge map was TOUGH, but both @Thebadlament & dev @LachlanSleight did an incredible, creative job making it work. Did we almost give up 100 times? Yes. Is it pretty amazing? Also yes. (4/6)

Why Tilt Brush? We were recreating a rainforest - rainforests are messy! Where digital assets can sometimes look a little too neat, we liked the organic messiness of Tilt. Plus we could use the stroke data to animate our plants growing (a cheeky level of detail trick) (3/6)

Almost every asset in Gondwana has been hand drawn in Tilt Brush by the amazing @Thebadlament. For those counting, that’s… 50,000 assets, and more than 50 endemic species, filling a fully explorable 350m2 virtual area with 7 microclimates. It’s so big it feels infinite! (2/6)
