My 9yr old asked me how many days were in summer vacation. My 16 yr old quoted Phinneas and Ferb: 104. I said not exactly sure. Then my 9yr old said 75. When I asked how he knew it, he said “Math told me”. I smiled.

I work at a hospital. In a meeting today employees sighed with a false sense of relief about the installation of a metal detector near the ED. And asked that their last named be removed from badges for “security”. This is America.

Overheard conversation.. Adult aged daughter to her parents: “Dogs are the new kids. Kids are the new exotic animals.” Interesting way to look at things? Or hogwash? Of course her mother immediately asked “Are you saying you don’t want children?”

Just another reminder that guns are still the number one cause of death for American kids and adolescents.

If you are a parent in America- the most likely cause of death for your child is gun violence. I don’t care if your left or right that should bother all of us.. You don’t want to make the phone call with no answer. I know too many who have. We have to do something.

But, they are 100% aligned with a profit model that seeks to drive high-volume, marginal quality episodes of care. We should seek to align resources & maximize value for patients, not create more fragmentation and silos that costs patients & the health care system more money.

Independent practice laws and regulations are a 20th century solution. They simply contradict what is known today about creating value in health care and they are incongruent with high-performing 21st century health delivery systems.

These efforts distract us from the real issues of creating patient-centric care systems that drive comprehensive, continuous and coordinated primary care and account for the costs incurred by individuals and families.
