How did populist narratives mobilize Trump voters and enable 'America First'? My book argues that populist rhetoric primarily appeals to voters' insecurities and emotions, remaking the concepts of 'Us' and 'Them' in the process. Out in March 2024: https://t.co/MAC1Wpdjfz

Under Trump 1.0 the US actually increased its commitment to the European Deterrence Initiative, both financially and militarily. You had a largely status quo oriented national security team (Kelly, Mattis, McMaster, etc.) Under Trump 2.0 the Generals are out and the MAGAs are in.
"Pentagon officials last week informed European diplomats that the US would no longer fund programmes that train and equip militaries in eastern European countries that would be on the frontline of any conflict with Russia,"1 https://t.co/lLRobNXrt0

It’s 1 September and the UK is in full autumn mode already without even skipping a beat. Temperature has cooled down, skies are overcast. Time for lit candles, good books, and fine whisky.

Abstract. This book rethinks hegemonic understandings of military victory as the outcome of war by focusing on the relationship between victory and time. W

This is a huge win for Putin: Trump has now fully adopted Putin's narrative of "comprehensive peace deal is better than quick ceasefire".

Trump lacks the courage to force an outcome, maybe he also fears to get the blame for selling out Ukraine. US military support for Ukraine and Europe will decrease going forward. All Putin has to do is wait. Trump can then just pass the buck and blame Europe for everything.

Trump didn‘t give away the farm in Alaska. Maybe the frantic last-minute entreaties by the Europeans and Zelenskyy did leave an impression. No land for peace, no cease-fire, but also no new sanctions and a diplomatic win for Putin, who literally had the red carper rolled out.
Trump may sincerely want to end the war, but he does not have the mental capacity to negotiate with Putin. You can't be tough if you don't understand the nuances of the issue you are negotiating. The result is that he gets manipulated, and he cannot produce any useful outcomes.
