10/ ADL isn’t a scam. It’s the brutal reality of leveraged markets: Exchanges never take the counterparty risk.

9/ People say: “On CEXs, ADL is a black box. On DEXs, it’s transparent.” True — on-chain, you can see everything. But when your profitable position is force-closed during a crash... does it really matter whether it happened on a CEX or a DEX?

8/ Hyperliquid also triggered ADL on October 11, for the first time in two years. It caused 35,000 liquidations among 20,000 users.

7/ Does Hyperliquid have ADL too? And why do they need a $3.5B insurance fund? Yes. Hyperliquid is not different here. Every derivatives venue has some version of ADL. It’s the last line of defense to keep the system solvent.

6/ ADL is an extreme measure — only used when the insurance fund is depleted or in a liquidity crisis. Naturally, exchanges avoid it, because it always sparks outrage. But ADL is what keeps exchanges neutral, never in deficit — even in a full-blown market meltdown.

5/ The exchange won’t fill that hole from its own pocket. Instead, it activates ADL. Profitable traders are sorted by priority (based on unrealized PnL and leverage). Then some of their positions are force-closed — their profit is used to cover the losses of those liquidated.

4/ When the market nukes, some traders can’t close in time. Liquidity disappears. Losing positions go negative — below their margin balance. Example: a trader owes $100K, but has only $50K in margin. That leaves a $50K hole.

3/ Exchanges don’t take counterparty risk. They aren’t one side of the trade, they only match longs and shorts, check margin, and liquidate when needed.

2/ At first glance — sounds like a scam. But in reality it’s the ADL (Auto-Deleveraging) mechanism at work.

1/ Big drama in the CIS community today. A trader on @Bybit had large short positions and a few longs. The shorts were supposed to even generate profit. But during the crash, Bybit closed the shorts at market, then liquidated the longs and even spot collateral. Result: –$1M.
