Celebrating our 45th wedding anniversary under lockdown. Up to now, there’s been someone else to take the pics. So while the rest of you have been learning how to make banana bread - we learned how to take a selfie.
RIP Angie Khumalo, the friendliest cashier at the Craighall Park Spar. It seems that she died of covid, after 4 weeks in hospital. Cashiers are frontline workers really.
If the J&J catastrophe had happened at a local factory we would have heard Third World what-what forever. Because it happened Over There, I actually heard a BBC commentator referring to it as a “mishap “. 60 million doses!
My daughter’s car broke down in the middle of the N1 North during rush hour. Thinking quickly, she took the pushchair ( fortunately bright red) out of the boot and put it behind the car to signal an obstruction to oncoming motorists and alert them to the small child in the car.
I heard a beautiful story about that. That if you are newly arrived from the EC, you can stand in the entrance of Midrand Newscafe and call out your clan names. Your family will raise their hands.
In the 3 hour traffic jam preceding the breakdown, the driver of a Checkers truck pulled faces at the screaming toddler in the car seat until she started laughing. The angel in the Checkers truck.
Entirely wonderful to walk past the Parkhurst Clinic and see a long vaxx line full of pink hair and short shorts. I waved at them and they looked at me blankly like the mad old lady I am. Lucky they couldn’t see I was crying too.
Two cars pulled over. Three men came to push the car out of harm’s way. A truck blocked a lane of traffic so they could cross to the emergency lane. My faith in people is affirmed.
I fear today is the last day of Peaceful Joburg, with nearly empty streets. Dear People Who Have Left - it’s lovely where you are, why don’t you stay awhile?

I have been doing ‘Good Morning’ tweets for just over a year now. I started the first Monday after lockdown, in March 2020. The blessing for me is that I have to go outside first thing every morning, breathe, look, listen, and greet the day for myself before I tweet a greeting.
Dear student. Verbs really matter. in academic writing. You can't have only four verbs in your voacbulary-quiver. Pay attention to the verbs in the journal articles and book chapters you read. Keep a verb-journal where you write down all the verbs you encounter in your reading.

I wish South African scientists would get credit for the excellent science that found the variant quickly, and for quickly being transparent with their information. It was not epidemiological evidence that alerted them. Just sustained study of the sequencing.
3. We do need to assume that this is far more widespread than we know given how little priority we placed on sequencing. So I’m assuming it’s near me even though we don’t know. 18/
My eyes fill with tears as I read that Ruth Bader Ginsburg has died. A woman I don’t know, in a country that isn’t mine. Apparently it is a great blessing and affirmation of righteousness, to die on Rosh Hashanah. May she rest in peace, and may her place be honourably filled.
This is extreme adulting. Making our own decisions on who to visit, whether to travel, how to gather, where to eat. Each decision affecting welfare, livelihood, life, of someone else. Can we do it, as a nation? I think we can.
Good morning wide world. Good morning crescent moon, morning star, owls hooting softly. Good morning sun rising behind the spires of the beloved city. Good morning 71 years on this earth. Surprised and delighted that I am still here.
Just a snippet of interest ..... At 21 minutes past 9 tonight, it will be the 21st minute of the 21st hour of the 21st day of the 21st week of the 21st year of the 21st century🥂
I highly recommend a film that has just opened on Netflix: The Two Popes. Excellent dialogue. Painful moral issues taken seriously. Anthony Hopkins and I can’t remember the other actor. And beautifully filmed
Good morning wide world. Good morning Johannesburg. Good morning grey skies. Good morning green frog balloon: there is a birthday in our household this morning, and adult children are here for Birthday Breakfast before they have to go to work.

Watching African women & men fighting to save humanity & the int'l legal system against the ruthless attacks supported/enabled by most of the West will remain one of the defining images of our time. This will make history whatever happens.
Good morning to anyone who can still see this tweet. Good morning Johannesburg. Good morning pair of Black-eyed Bulbuls having a loud argument over my head (Ikhwebula, iPogota, Rankgwetshe, Rramorutiakole, Swartoogtiptol). Good morning dandelion with half her wishes already gone.
Dear political parties, have you ever met anyone, one single voter, who changed their mind and voted for you because of a recorded phone message? Why do you do it??
Dear
@CyrilRamaphosa
please please do not trim the public service by offering packages. The best, who know that they will easily find work elsewhere, will go. We will be left with the worst. Please do not repeat this mistake that is made over and over.
The bilingual brain. Fascinating article, starting with an overheard isiXhosa conversation in London. "to be monolingual, as many native English speakers are, is to be in the minority, and perhaps to be missing out. "
I bought myself a new rose. At Ludwig’s, as is proper for the season, all the roses are pruned down to their stalks. But one was still flowering so I bought it. The rose is called ‘South Africa’
@BrentLindeque
One thing? Early morning birds in Johannesburg. People dancing in church. Strangers who greet - especially when, as an elderly person, I get the appropriate arm-across-the-chest greeting. Nando’s ads. Being called Gogo. People who greet govt failure with grief not glee. The light

Dear people of Joburg Twitter. Please lift your spirits by going for a walk through the cosmos at Delta Park. A huge field of it, taller than I am! In the part of Delta next to Bantam Road.
I don’t pay a lot of attention to right-wing USA politics. But I really mind that Marjorie Taylor Green is comparing Donald Trump to Nelson Mandela, because of both men being arrested. I really mind that.
Good morning Twitter. Good morning Johannesburg. Good morning full moon high in a cloudy sky. Good morning vase of Easter tulips. Good morning Easter. Halleluia.

I listen to all the responses of all the politicians. To my surprise, it is Julius Malema who resonates most with me. “The South African police need to fall in love with the South African people”
Good morning Twitter. Good morning Johannesburg. Good morning bright stars: Scorpio overhead. Good morning no birds yet. Good morning small visitor in my house. Good morning all who are grieving. Courage, friends.
If one of your New Year’s resolutions is to get to know your fellow South Africans better, I recommend this book. Don’t explain, don’t argue, just listen.
Good morning Twitter. Good morning Johannesburg. Good morning cool clear day. Good morning little birds, bouncing and chattering, colonising the big bottlebrush tree. Good morning small orange rose unfolding.
Opening the schools is the most difficult part of unwinding the lockdown. The Department of Education is walking a tightrope over a raging torrent, in a thunderstorm, balancing a most precious cargo. Don't shout so loudly..
Good morning wide world. Good morning Johannesburg. Good morning garden full of summer scents. Good morning pair of boubou shrikes in the buddleia - what an early morning gift! Good morning white May bush in full bloom and bud.
Good morning Twitter. Good morning Johannesburg. Good morning sky of grey clouds moving fast. Good morning murmuration of small birds in the thorn tree. Good morning pink stars opening on the ice plant.
This is a very serious issue. The matric curriculum needs to be reduced by about 40%. But every commentator and interest group has suggestions for the schools to cover more, not less. Tell me, Twitter, when did you last make use of trigonometry in your daily work?
💔My Daughter is in Matric this year, she leaves the house at 6am comes back at 6pm Monday to friday, goes to school on Saturdays & Sundays, she is always exhausted and all she does is sleep for 2hours when she gets home & back on her study table again, her school thinks this is

yesterday. Here he is with UJ VC Tshilidzi Marwala. The citation honours him as an ethical business leader with “wisdom and humanity”, who still promotes dialogue, and is “anchored in Africa”

Good morning Twitter. Good morning Johannesburg. Good morning last bats, first birds. Good morning grey and white clouds moving slowly across a dawn-blue sky. Good morning Peace rose unfolding.
Just the opposite. Science misled us for a long time about raising bilingual children. Now it seems that the earlier a child hears different languages, the better. Where did the bad science come from? English-speaking monolingual countries...
I was reading up about raising a bilingual child. I thought it would negatively impact my son and will take him longer to talk but it's quiet the contrary...
Good morning wide world. Good morning Johannesburg. Good morning high blue sky, with little fringes of white cloud across the horizon. Good morning sunshine. Good morning tree fern unfurling into the new year.

Good morning wide world. Good morning Johannesburg. Good morning gentle rain. Good morning all the candles of the Advent wreath: Hope, Peace, Joy, Love. And the central candle, the Christmas Day candle, which is for Light.
